The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet. I AM glad to hear that C. T. Studd whose arrival in England for a holiday after some years residence in China, was referred to in this column last week, may be seen in the cricket field this summer. He returns to the far east when autumn comes, but hopes to play for M.C.C. in some of the less important matches at any late. It will be curious to note how much his form has survived the long spell of cricket idleness which has betn inevitable during his stay amongst the pig-tailed pagans of whom he has been endeavouring to make proselytes. Aiwa) s in old days a favourite on the field he wilt be warmly greeted on his reappearance. T h e staff of the Southern District are nothing if not energetic. Of course that ^oes without saying, but in their match v>ith the Connaught Rangers last week il eir energy was truly marvellous. In ibe first hour of their innings Major Friend and Captain Johnson put on the very respectable score for an afternoon’s play of 200 runs. The captain’s was the harder hit innings as in his 133 were 27 fours and four threes, which looks almost an impossible proportion. Major Friend was not far behind in hitting, for his 129 included 19 fours and 8 threes.
