Cricket 1895

M a y 2, 1895. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 107 THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1895. Work at H a il e y b u r y C o l l e g e , which, by the way, has the Hon. Edward Lyttleton— whose style Andrew Lang used to eulogise as “ the champagne of cricket” —for its head master, does not begin till to-morrow. Hence it is not possible as yet to say anything about the possibilities in respect of new and likely players. E. F. Long, who is the captain, will have five other old choices to assist him in P. P. Graves, J. F. Carter, the Hon. Sec., S. L. Hartle, R. O. Lee, and H. F. F. Phillips. The dates for the Selwyn match, which is the only new fixture, and that with the Eton Ramblers, have still to be settled. Otherwise the card is as under. All the matches are to be played at Haileybury except those with Wellington College, which will be at Wellington, and that with Cheltenham, which is to take place at Lords. The pro fessional is T. Attewell, jun. The eleven will this year, too, have the advantage of the valuable advice of Mr. P. H. Latham, who was captain of the Cambridge X I. last year. HAILEYBURY COLLEGE. May 18. v. F. H. The other four, E. H. Weigall, A. W. White, E. W. Eliot, and H. D. Thorburn; and by no means a bad quartette, as the public school records of 1894 will attest. According to appearances the side should turn out to be strong, as in addition to the old choices, there is a good number of likely bowlers among the recruits. In this department there is every reason to believe Wellington will be above the average. The Charterhouse match this year is to be played at Charterhouse. Haileybury, though, will have to come to Wellington, so that there will be one school match at Wellington. The match list is as follows:— WELLINGTON COLLEGE. May 18. v. May 25. y. FIFTEEN COLTS AND CAPTAIN. Rain, which made the ground very heavy on the first day ('lhursday), prevented any play at all on the following day Under the circumstances the Colts batted at a great dis advantage. Gray’s 18 included a hit from Hillyard over the pavilion for six. The only other batsmen who exhibited anything ap proaching form were Robinson and Mabbutt, both of whom stayed for an hour, and shaped well. Woodcock went on to bowl when seven wickets had fallen for 5*2, and took the other eight at a cost of only two runs, which only came off his bowling. Of the six Colts bowlers yet tried, Tomlin, a younger brother of the County pro., proved by far the most successful. He bowled Mr. Hiilyard, Holland, and Pougher. Score and analysis : T he C olts .
