T h e G en tlem en h ave seven tim es scored in an innings 400 runs or m o r e : 518, at the Oval in ’70 ; 496, Brighton, *71; 449, Lord’s, ’76 ; 444, Lord’s, ’75; 441, Lord’s, 83; 427, Oval, ’77; 400, Prince’s, ’77. The Players have only done so twice: 454, Lord’s, ’92; 405, Oval, ’77. But the Players have sixteen scores of between three and four hundred, against the Gentlemen’s eleven. Scoring, except in the early years of the match, has seldom been exceptionally small. In 1823, the Gentlemen were dis missed for 59 and 56 ; in 1850 for 42 and 58 ; in 1864 for 60 and 59. The Players were out (to the bowling of Lillywhite and Broadbridge, the two given men on the Gentlemen’s side) for 24 and 37 in 1829. In 1833, Sixteen Gentlemen were dis missed in their first attempt for 42. The smallest scores of the last twenty years have been 59 by the Gentlemen at Prince’s in 1875, and the same number by the Players at the Oval in 1891. The smallest score of all is the Players’ 24 in 1829. In all, the Gentlemen have been dismissed 59 times for scores less than 100, the Players 37 times. In 25 of the 128 matches have over 800 runs been registered, in six cases out of the 25 over 1000 being scored. The full list is as follows:— Runs scored Wickets down At Year 1145 ... ... 31 ... Lord’s ... 1876 It is worthy of note that, although more than double as many matches have been decided at Lord’s as at the Oval, thirteen of these big-scoring games were played at Kennington, and only eight on the M.C.C, ground. Little more now remains to be said, save to hope that the match may long be up to its best traditions, and that on many another occasion when Gentlemen and Players meet in the bloodless warfare of the good greensward I may be there to see. For (to conclude with Mr. Andrew Lang’s words, in default of aught one- hundredth part as good of my own), “ There’ s one word that moved me when a boy, That moves, to-d ay; ’ Tis when the umpire, to the general joy, Pronounces ‘ Play !’ “ May I, ere Time, with all that he can bring Of sorrows serried, Takes that delight from the delights of spring, Be dead and buried “ By some field-path where cricketers may pass Along its mazes, And over me the green short English grass, The English daisies.’’ GRANVILLE (LE E )-C A P TA IN ’ S XI. v.
