Cricket 1894
NOV. -29, 1894 CB1GKST; A WEEKLY &ECOBD OF *HB GAME, 443 altered, but the extremes would not be so great, and this cleavage between the stronger and weaker ones, which so struck Mr. Holmes, would be much reduced. Whether any system can be devised which ■will mathematically reflect true degrfes of merit I am not prepared to say, but certainly that frequently advocated by correspondents in the Press goes much nearer to it than the present one. I allude to the system of com paring the averages per innings of all the runs made for each side, with the averages per wicket made against them, and deducting the latter from the former, or the former from the latter, as the case may be, to arrive at the order of merit. Treated in this way the counties as given by Mr. Holmes, and omitting Derbyshire and Somersetshire as not having played the full period, come out as follows 1 Lancashire .. 3 6 2 Notts .. .. 3.4 3 Surrey . . •• 2.6 4 Yorkshire .. 1.9 5 Middlesex . . —0.2 6 Kent .. . . — 1.6 7 Gloucester . . —3.1 8 bussex .. . . —5.9 The old system puts Notts first, Lancashire second, Yorkshire third, and Surrey fourth. Now if you look at the tables of averages you will at once see that the new order must ba correct. For instance, Lancashire has an advantage of 1.7 runs on the wickets taken by her, while Notts' advantage of runs made by her is 1 5, so that Lancashire must have a fractional advantage. In the same way Surrey is 2.1 runs per wicket better than Yorkshire, and only 1.4 per wicket worse in bowling, so that she dearly has decidedly the best of it. This new system has also the great advantage that it eliminates a considerable portion of the luck in that it takes account of all the drawn matches and ties, and thus does away with the anomaly of taking no account of matches that would ha-, e been lost and won if there had been five minutes more time. The present system thus gives undue prominence to the luck of the side as a whole, while the new one eliminates this, and repre sents entirely the skill and luck of the individuals forming the side, and as the latter is a merely postulatory entity of which the individuals are the reality, surely it is the more rational.—Yours faithfully, Barmouth, Oct. 31.
