Payne in his letter in j our last issue has failed to understand what will seem to many ( Id-fashioned people to be the best point in the new scheme for the County Championship, as given forth by the Marylebone Club. This is that a County may be “ first-class,” without being qualified to compete iu the championship. Tnis point is so clearly defined that it is curious that it escaped Mr. Payne’s notice. Further, the rule d isticciy says : “ [The county champion ship] ahal' be competed for by first-class counties. No county shall be eligible unless it shall have plavtd at least eight out and home matches with other couniies” . . . . but there is no word about the other counties having to be eligible. As regards tie matches no doubt half a point ought to be added for the half-win, but also half a point ought to be deducted for half loss. The result is thus the same, as far as Championship poir ts go, as if the game were drawn: but there is l o reason to count the game as “ unfinished.” A county which played nine matches, won eight, and drew oue would rank as having won eight-eighths (or a maximum) of its finished games; but if it wron eight, and had a tie in tlie ninth game, it would win eight-ninths of its finished games, and would not be in such a good position as before. This is obviously quite fur, for a county which has incurred half a loss cannot possiblv be said to have won all its finished games.—Yourp, etc., P. M. SUKl'HKRD, Union Mount. Dundee, 10 Nov., 1891. CRICKET IN INDIA. CAWNPORE v. DELHI. This inter-station match was played at Delhi on October 29, 30, and 31, and resulted iu an easy win for the home team, who were superior at all points to the visitors. R. G. Munn pla\ed a fine but lucky innings, and the match was prolonged to enable him to complete his century, which he eventually did. C awnfobe . Second Im ings. .17 c and b Staintcn 41 G. B.
