By Dh. H. B. B ra n d . As the merits of the leading batsmen and bowlers in the cricket world are frequently canvassed, the following tables will be studied with interest. The first-class averages there given comprise the seasons for the last thirty years. Few of the cricketers whose names are there set out could boast of having played for so long as thirty years, or even half that time, but it will be seen that the performances of some of the “ old 'uns ” compare most favourably with those of the more modern lights. Some are dead ; others have come and gone, but Dr. \V. G. Grace apparently goes on for ever. He has been playing longer, taken more wickets, been in more times, scored more runs, and got a bigger average than any other cricketer, amateur or professional; no one before, or who has come on the scene since, has equalled him ; this season he is as keen as ever, still making runs, still taking wickets, and it is not too much to say that, as an all round cricketer and general, he still holds the grand title of champion.
