Cricket 1894
OCT. 25, 1894 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 427 of his fingers so badly in stopping one from Bathurst, that he had to give up further participation in the match, a great loss to the all-round cricket of the side. Lucas was the chief scorer. On the following day the Philadelphians made a disappointing show with the bat. Hillyard bowled with great success in the first innings, which only pro duced 107 runs. The weather was wet and stormy, and the wicket had cut up badly by the time the Philadelphians followed-on. B . W . Clark and H . P. Baily were the most successful, each scoring double figures in good Btyle in both innings. R. D . Brown also got runs, but with the single exception of A. M. W ood, none of the other men showed anything like their true form , and fell easy victim s to the Englishm en’ s effective attack. W . F. W hitwell bowled in grand style. His record of nine wickets for 58 runs in the match was an exceptional performance, and although he received considerable assistance from the condition of the ground, his work stamped him as a bowler of considerable skill. L. C. V. Bathurst in the second also did a good share of the work, and the Philadelphia batsmen found it very difficult to make runs off them. L ord H a w k e ’ s T eam . C. W. G E N T L EM EN OF CANADA. H eavy rain in the early morning made it rather doubtful if this match would begin at Toronto on October 3 as fixed. Fortunately, however, the weather cleared up soon afier noon, and a few minutes after two o ’clock De Trafford and H ill appeared to open the batting for the Englishmen, who had won the toss. D e Trafford was again unlucky, returning the third ball of the match to the bowler. The first partner to give H ill any help was W right, and the latter was in nearly an hour for five runs. Still, their partnership furnished the stand of the innings, having added 41 runs. H ill was fifth out at 72. Of this sum he had contributed 48, the result of just under two hours’ batting. Bathurst was in half an hour without scoring, but Jater on showed to better advantage, and ultimately carried out his bat for a well-played score of 34. The Rev. F. W. Terry, who played for Som ersetshire some 3ears ago, fielded in brilliant style at cover-point. Otherwise the fielding was at times faulty, or the total of the Englishmen would not have been even as good s it was. Lang, Boyd, and Horstead were the chief scorers for the Canadians, who were 33 on for the five wickets to fall when the match ended. L ord H a w kh ’ s T eam . The Englishmen, who only arrived from Montreal early in the morning, commenced the last match of their |tour on October 4th, against fifteen representing all Massachusetts, at Lowell. The Oval wicket was in excellent condition, and Lord Hawke won the toss and sent in Hill and Bathurst. The innings opened most disastrously. H ill, Bathurst, and Lucas were dismissed in rapid succession by Chambers for a cypher. Mordaunt, however, by steady batting, com piled forty-four. '1hanks subsequently toD e Trafford and Lord Hawke, the innings ultimately realised 17d. The home team made little stand, and were all out for 53, H illyard taking nine wickets for 15, and Bathurst five for 24. In the follow - on they did better, but were ultimately beaten by an innings and 19 runs. L o r d H a w k e ’ s T w e l v e . L. C. V. Bathurst, b G. W.
