The pair in question—A. W . Seecull and Frank Hearne—had as their companion for the voyage Mr. W . A. Simkins, who has filled the responsible and often thankless position of manager of the tour with such judgment and tact throughout. As Messrs. Kempis, Glover, Par’ in, and Rowe left on the day following the completion of the programme, six of the party havo so far gone home. The accuracy of the report that Mr. Halliwtll, the wicket-keeper, had arranged to stay here with a view to qualify for Surrey, can be judged from the fact that he leaves on his return journey on Saturday week, with Mr. H.Cadwallader, the prime mover of the first visit of South African cricketers, who has accompanied the team daring the tcur as a special corres pondent. M il l s , I hear, is staying till the 29ih, and Mr. Castens, the captain of the team, till next month. Mr. C. O. H . Sewell, who h is relatives in Cirencester, is staying permanently in England, with a view, it is said, of assisting Glouces tershire after the due completion of the residential qualification. The mem bers of the team, it goes without saying, are thoroughly well pleased with the success they have achieved on tho cricket field, although naturally dis appointed at the failure of the tour from a financial standpoint. They are so far oncouraged, indeed, as to hint already at the possibility of another visit some three years hence, with a more ambitious pro gramme for fulfilment. T h e same steamer which has Messrs. Simkins, Seccull, and Ilearne on board is by tho way, carrying out to South Africa an English cricketer who not so many years ago was specially conspicuous by his high scoring. Colonel F. W . Rhodes, l o w on his way on the “ Athenian ” to take up the post of administrator of Mashonaland and Matabeleiand, was one o f the most successful rungetters in minor matches in the eighties. During hisstay in Ireland ten or eleven summers back, his name figured largely in the list of big innings, and one season, somewhere about >3 or '84, he had several hundreds to his credit in connection with Dublin cricket. T he gallant Colonel is a well-deserved title in his case, for he did brilliant service during the whole c f the Egyptian Cam paign. At Snakim his daring won for him the Turkish or er of the Medjidie, and more recently his own compatriots have recognised his work by enrolling him for the Distinguished Service Order. For the last four years he has been acting as military secretary to Lord Harris, another keen ciicketer, at Bombay. T h e instances are very rare of such a successful first appearance ia a County match of importance as that of F. C.
