Cricket 1894

358 SBICRE¥s A WEEKLY BECOKB ta? THE AUG. 30, 1894 M IDDLESEX v. KENT. Unfortunately the rain prevalent everywhere at the end of last week curtailed the cricket in this m atch at Lord’s very considerably. A comm ence m ent was not possible on Thursday in consequen € of the heavy rainfall and from the same cause the wicket on Saturday was clearly so unfit that the umpires at once pronounced against a resum p tion of the game. '•he actual cricket consisted of about three hours’ play on Friday. This tim e was occupied with the com pletion o f an innings by Kent. For a long tim e it looked as if they would be out for considerably less than a hundred. That they were not was due in a great measure to the laxity of the fie’ding of Middlesex. As it was, even with this indulgence, six of the test batsm en on the side were out for only 38. Mr M archant, who had one life, was the first to make any stand, and sub- seque-'tly Mr. Kemp and Martin, also ?et off by the field, and W alter Hearne lent such useful assistance that the last four wickets were able to increase the score by 77 runs. Alec Hearne, who went in first, was tatting, it may be added, an hour for one run. J. T. Hearne, it will be seen, bowled with great success, although badly supported by the field. Bia six wickets on'y cost 53 runs. B» cl light prevented Middlesex goiria in on Friday Light, and as the w.cket, after another heavy downpour, Was not fit on Saturday, Kent’s one innings repre sented the extent of the cricket. Rain praitica'ly reduced the cricket in this m atch a tT .u ton at the end o f last week, to a libtle over two hours’ play on Friday afternoon. A comm encem ent was not possible on Thursday owing to the heavy rainfall, and when play did begin on Friday it looked as if Somersetshire w ou'd be able to claim a great advantage in going in first. A fresh wieket had bean prepared, and Messrs L Palairet and Hill m ade such good use of the slow pitch, that fifty-four runs had been m ade in the same num ber of minutes, when Mr. Palairet was oat. After their separation the batting, with one exc ptio-», failed com pletely before H irst’s excellent bowling. Mr. Roe, who went in first wicket down, was seen to great advantage. He received, however, very sm all assistance, and. in fact, the last nine wickets fell for 53, of which his share was 23 not out. Hir t’s fow ling was quite exceptional. He delivered twenty-one overs for thirty-two runs and seven wicket3, remarkable figures. Mr. Jackson and Hirst had made three runs for Yorkshire in th^ same number o f overs wben rain stopped play on Friday. The downfall, too, continued during the night, as well a9 the following morning, and as the wicket would never subs ?quently have bee a fib for play, it was decided early on Saturday to give up the game as drawn.
