T h e Y orkshire eleven avenged their defeat in the first m atch o f the season at L eicester, in the return p 'ay ed at H arrogate on T hursday and F riday. R ain n ot on ly interfered w ith th e gam e considerably on th e first day, bu t a f fected the pitch so m u ch subsequently that th e batsm en generally w ere seen to great disadvantage. N either C ounty had quite its fu ll strength, as w hile L ord H aw ke and M r. F . S. Jackson w ere unable to assist Y orkshire, Leicestershire w as w ith ou t M r. G. W H illyard. Y orkshire, w inning the toss, rem ained in until ju st before fou r o ’clock on T hursday, th e extent o f the day’s play. A t the lu ncheon in terval the pcore w as 114 w ith h a lf the side out, but after heavy rain during the interval, M r. S tocks bow led w ith such success that on ly 28 runs w ere added. T h e young bow ler nam ed to o k seven w ickets fo r 69 runs, an excellent perform an ce. R ain, w h ich stopped play on th e com p letion of Y orkshire’s innings, caused the w icket to be all in favour o f the tow lers on F riday, and thirty w ickets fell fo r an aggregate o f 258 runs. W hen L eicestersh ire w ent in. P eel and W ainw right baw led unchanged, and the total only reached 64, o f w hich £7 w ere p u t on by W arren and H olland for the third w icket. P eel’s bow ling was particularly effective. A s w ill be seen, he d eliverel ninety- seven balls fo r 80 runs and seven w ickets. Y ork shire, w ith a big lead o f 78, began their second innings badly, so m u ch so that the score w as only 40 w hen the seventh w ick et fell. Som e free cricket b y D enton and H irst im proved m atters considerably fo r them , and D eo ton eventually carried ou t his bat for a very useful 25. W ith 174 to w in, L eicestersh ire, as th e w ick et w as, h a d an alm ost im possible task. F ive batsm en got dou ble figures, but still th e innings, w hich lasted an hour and fifty m inutes, only realised 99, so that Y ork shire w on b y 74 runs. H irst’s bow ling, it w ill be seen, w as very effective at th e finish. H is analysis show ed sixteen balls fo r fou r runs and three w ickets. Y o r k s h ir e . F irst Innings. M r. E .
