M ID D L E S E X . A fter an interesting gam e throughout, York" shire w on their return m a tch w ith M iddlesex, on T u esday at Sheffield, w ith fou r w ickets to spare. 'J h e B ram all L an e ground during the last tw o seasons has n ot been in the b est condition, and in th is case the p itch w as m ade w orse b y tho recent rain. M iddlesex, w h o w ere w ith ou t M r. O’Brien, w on th e toss, but m ade little use o f their g ood fo r tune, and w ere all ou t in tw o hours and tw enty m inutes. Peel, w h o w as unchanged, tow led w ith m arked success, helped b y excellent all roun d fielding, and in p ro o f o f the in equality o f the t atting it need on ly b e added th a t w hile the sco ie w as 50 w ith tw o m en out th e to ta l w as on ly 98. W h en Y orkshire w ent in, though the w icket w as sti 1 difficult, som e very different batting w as showD. L ord H aw ke and Mr. Jackson before they w ere sepa rated pu t on 80 runs, o f w h ich the form er's share w as on ly 25. T unnicliffe, B row n, and Mr. Sm ith w ere soon dism issed, bu t P eel and M r. Jackson b oth scored freely, and at the finish on M onday th ey w ere still in, having added 61 runs in fifty m inutes. A t th a t tim e th e score w as 167 w ith Mr. Jack son n ot ou t 90, and P eel n ot ou t 35. R ain delayed the com m en cem en t on T uesday m orning fo r an hour, and then uoder th e influence of a bright sunshine, the w icket gave the bowler,* so m u ch h elp, that in forty-five m inu tes the innings w as finished fo r an addition o f on ly 17 runs. R aw lin w as in fa ct qu ite unplayable, and in nine o ers h e dism issed six batsm en at a cost of only eight runs. M r. Jackson w as u n fortu n ate enough to m iss his hundred by nine runs. H e h a d only added one on T uesday w hen h e returned a ball to R aw lin. O ut o f 173 he had co n tri'u te d 91. and it is n o exaggera ion to say that, as the w icket was, and against such bow lers as J. T . H earne and R aw lin, it w as quite a lem ark able innings. He w as at the w ickets tw o hours and a h alf, w ith on ly on e really easy chance w hen he had got 74. M iddlesex began their secon d in nings in a m in ority of 86, and w ith a pitch still favouring the b ow lers m aterially, the m a jority of the baism en w en t in fo r a forcin g gam e. H a lf the side w ere dow n fo r 62, bu t th e ta il played up pluckily, so that the result aft?r all w as a very creditable total o f 152. W ainw right’s bow lin g w as qu ite excep tional. H e dism issed all the first nine batsm en out, and w as unfortunate enough ju st to m iss the rare feat o f taking all the w ickets, the last m an (M r. B athurst) being caught a t the w icket off Mr. J acks ;n. 'Jh ough Y orkshire ha 1 on ly to get 67 to w in, it w as generally felt th a t this task was b y n o m eans an easy one. L ord H aw ke and Mr. J ack son pu t on 17 b efore the latter w as out, and then L ord Haw ke and T unnicliffe w ere dism issed, m aking three w ickets dow n fo r 81. Mr 8m ith, w ho w as le t off hefore he had scored, lost B row n at 42, bu t P eel and Mr Sm ith h it ou t and the gam e w as a tie w ith the tw o batsm en still ia. B efore the w inning run w as m ade, how ever, b oth M r. Sm ith and P eel w ere bow led, and it Was left to W ain w right to w i i an exceedingly g ood m atch fo r Y ork shire. R aw lin again bow led w ith great success. H is tw elve tick e ts in the m atch on ’ y cost t5 runs. M id d l e s e x . F irst Innings. Mr. A. J.
