W a rd and B arton show ed fine crick et fo r H am psh ire on F riday m orning. T h ey p u t on 172 fo r th e th ird w icket, and th ou gh each h a d a life, th eir b attin g w as th rou gh ou t o f a very h igh class, T h e subsequent batsm en m ade a p o o r show again st th e bow ling of S antall and P allett, and as th e last seven w ickets on ly added 35, W arw ick- w ickshire a fter all w ere on ly 60 behind on the first in nings. T h e w icket, ow ing to recent rain, w as very soft at th e outset, and W . G . w as apparen tly a little in dou bt as to the b est cou rse to pursue w hen he h «d w on th e toss. A s it w as, th e early play w as in no w ay suggestive o f a g ood score, and w hen the eighth w icket fell th e tota l w as only 88 A rem ark­ able stand by Mr. F ran cis and B oard changed the w hole aspectof the m a tch . W h ile th e form er at first played a defensive gam e, B oa rd h it ou t lu stily and to such a tune that h e scored 50 o f the n ext 76 runs in five m in u tes under th e hour. A fter a tim e, too, the am ateur show ed m ore freedom , and w hen he w as out, after an addition o f l::0,bis ow n share w as 55, an in valuable innings, w ith ou t a fault. R oberts w as b ow led the first ball he had, and so th e side w ere ou t fo r 228. B oa rd carried ou t his bat fo r 84, a rem ark ably fine display o f spirited batting. H e gave n o ch an ce, and h is score w as far and aw ay th e b est thin g h e h a s don e as yet in C ounty crick et. M iddlesex, w h o m ade six at the expense of P h illip s’ w icket in th e last ten m in u tes on T hursday night, w ere b attin g fo r tw o hours and a quarter on the follow in g day. T h e w ick et under a brigh t sun w as very difficult, and the young C lifton ian, C. L . T ow n send, m ade the b all do a great deal.
