T h e dou ble victory o f the S om ersetshire eleven lent additional interest to their return m a tch w ith M iddltsex. fixed fo r the first h alf o f th is w eek at T a u n ton , and there w as con sequ en tly a g ood attendance ou B ank H oliday. R ain prevented a start on M onday aftern oon until h alf-past tw o o ’clock , and then M iddlesex, w ho w on th e toss, m ade such a bad start that three o f the best b ats m en w ere ou t fo r on ly nineteen. M r. L u ca s also gave little trouble, and the first, as it w as the on ly stand o f the innings, w as w hen M r. O’B rien join ed R aw liu on the fa it of the fou rth w icket, rtfter a tim e b oth batsm en scored freely, and in a little under tw o hou s 149 runs w ere added. R iw- lin, w ho had been in a little over tw o hours,w as then ou t fo r a fine score o f 85 absolutely w ith ou t a fault, flf'r. W arner, the O xonian w ho m ade his first appear an ce for M iddlesex in this m atch, a fter m aking six, w as ou t lbw , and before play ceased on M on day, P hillips, Mr. W ats >n, and M r. B athurst w ere all dism issed, leaving Mr. O 'B rien n t ou t w ith 79 to his credit. On T uesday m orning, H earne stayed in w hile Mr. O’B rien added 31, and w ith the f< rm er’8 dism issal at 231 the innings w as c'osed . Mr. O ’Brien, w ho carried ou t his I a t for 1 0, w as at the w icket three hours and five m inutes w ithout givnig a chance. Mr. H ill signalised the com m en ce m ent o f S om ersetshire's innings with som e resolute hitting, and o f the 1:9 scored on the fall o f tbe third w icket his share w as 79, the result of ju st under tw o hours cr ic k e t. T he su sequent batting hardly fulfilled the prem ise o f the early part o f the innings. M essrs. R oe and W o ds, indeed, alone got dou ble figures, and chiefly through R aw lin 's t ffactive bow ling the later batsm en did so little iliat the total, after all, on ly reach ed 203. R aw lins took five w lck eis for 35 runs. G oing in a secon d tim e 25 runs to the good, M iddlesex again began badly. In a little over an hour 70 runs were scored at a cost o f five w ickets, and w ith M iddlesex 95 on, and h a lf their w ickets in hand, play ceased on T uesday. R a ;n overnight had n ot im proved the w ickes fo r yester day, and Capt. H edley b ow led w ith such success in the m orning, that the last h a lf o f the M iddlesex innings on ly reached i:3 runs. T h is left Som ersetshire w ith 1 9 to w in, and their chances, n o t perhaps the m ost h op efu l as the w icket w as, w ere con sid era bly reduced by the failure o f the early batsm en. B y lu n ch eon tim e fou r w ickets had fallen fo r fourteen and though the P alairets, and subsequently M r. D unlop, Mr. G ay, and T yler played up pluckily, M iddlesex alw ays had a little in hand, eventually w inning b y 19 runs. K aw liu’s all-round crick et had m uch to do w ith their success. B esides scorin g 93 in the m atch, h e took ten w ickets fo r 82 runs. M id d l e s e x . Pir^t Innings. S econd Innings. Mr. A.
