On Satur day m orning W ard added 10, and then, w hen one short, ran him self ou t in over-anxiety to reach his hundred. G loucestershire, w h o w ere fortunate enough to w in the toss, m ade a fairly g ood start on F riday m orning. F erris helped W .G . to pu t on 43 for the first w icket, and though P aioter, w ho follow ed Ferris, w as soon out, R ice gave his captain useful help to the extent o f 33 runs fo r the third w icket. Ih e n W .G ., w h o had played in his best form fo r an hour a rd forty m inutes, w as caught, having scored 52 o f the total o f 90. R ice saw W rathall and Jessop go b efore his capital in nings, w hich had lasted an hour and ten m inutes, cam e to an end. Six w ickets w ere dow n fo r 108 w hen E . M. G race and F rancis becam e partners. B oth batsm en played w ith confidence, as w ell as judgm ent, and their stand, w hich resulted in an addition o f 77 runs, w as the feature of the innings. A t 185 F rancis w as ou t lbw , and then the innings cam e to a rapid end fo r an addi tion o f fourteen runs. E.M . carried ou t his bat fo r 44, a m ost valuable display of batting w ith on ly one ch an ce ju st before w as ou t w hen W ar w ickshire w ent in they w ere unlucky in losing Mr. B ain ridge before he scored, and D iv er,h is su c cessor, w ith only fourteen runs on. T he broth ers Q uaife. how ever, steadily got the m easure o f the G loucestershire \ ow lm g, and in spite o f frequent changes 126 had been added w ith both batsm en still in w hen play ceased on Friday. W . G . Q uaife’s 45 n ot ou t w as w ithout a m istake, but, his broth er in his 77, had tw o lives, the first w hen he had g ot JO, the secon d at 5j0. On Saturday m orning W . G. Q uaife w as bow led w ith ou t an addition to his total, and W alter w hen lie had on ly added five. A fter their separation little resistance w as offered to the G lou cester shire bow lers, and the eight outstanding w ickets on Saturday m orain e only increased th e score by 84 ru rs.
