A little m ore than a day sufficed fo r the com p le tion of the return m atch betw een these neighbour ing cou n tie*, begun at hheffield on M onday. T he w icket a t the com m en cem en t w as soft, and from the first batsm en fou n d run getting a m atter o f great difficulty P eel, w h o captain ed Yorkshire in th e absence o f L o rd H aw ke, Mr. Jackson, and M r. Sellers,w on the toss, and decided to go in first. T he result w as disastrous, and D avidson’s bow lin g p 'o v e d so effective that the total w as on ly 49 w hen th e n in th w icket fell. Again, how ever, H irst and H unter cam e to the rescue of their side w ith som e plu ck y cricket, and their stand fo r the last w icket realised 33 runs. H irst carried ou t his bat fo r 27, n ot only the highest score on the side, b u t an innings of the greatest value, and, u od er th e circu m stan ces, a very pluck y, as w ell as m eritorious, display of cricket. D avidson ’s t ow ling w as the ch ief cause o f the ch ea p dism issal o f th e Y orkshirem en. H e took eight o f the ten w ickets a t a cost o f on ly 33 runs. W h en D erbyshire w en t in H ulm e hit w ell, and a little later C hatterton and D avidson show ed som e excellent crick et against the good bow lin g o f Y orksh re adding 42 runs in the sam e n u m ber o f miLU es. C hatterton, w ho had played adm irable cricket, w as fifth ou t at 79 , but afterw ards S torer alone shaped w ell against the bow ling o f W ainw ritiht and P eel. T he last fiv* w ickets, indeed, only added 25, so that after all D erbyshire had to be con ten t w ith a lead o f 21 runs. W ain w riglit’s bow ling w as th e m ost su c cessful on th e Y orkshire side. H e took five w ickets for 29 runs. Y orkshire had fifty m inutes left fur b attin g on M onday night, and, in a t ad light, H ulm e bJlvled w ith such success that half the side w tre out b efore play ceased fo r 34. W hen th e gam e w as resum e 1 on T uesday m orr- ing Y orkshire w ere eleven run s on w ith five w ickets gone, B ulm e, how ever, ng»in bow led w ith great effect so m u ch so th a t the last five w ickets ®nly added 16 H ulm e took all these last w ickets at a co s t o f but eight runs. His analysis fo r the in nings show ed nine o f th e ten w ickets fo r an average o f three runs apiece. W ith 28 to w in, D erbyshire lost Sug* w hen the m atch w as a tie, and then Mr. W right m ade the w inning hit, leaving th e victory w ith D erbyshire b y nine w ickets. Y o r k s h ir e .
