T hough under any circu m stan ces this w ould have been a creditable perform ance, its value w as em phasised b y the fa ct th a t ow ing to an io ju ry to his hands w hile batting, P ougher w as unable to bow l, so that L eicestersh ire had to do w ith ou t the h elp o f its best bow ler. T he first da y’s play w ent a little in favour o f N otts, w ho, a fter dism issing th e h om e team fo r 123, had th em selve 3 m ade 134 fo r th e loss o f eight w ickets I efore p 'a y ceased. T h e highest individual scorer w as t low ers, w ho w as at the w ickets ju st an hour and a h a lf fo r an excellent 50. W ood cock , w ho had taken six o f the eight N otti w ickets overnight, dism issed th e tw o rem aining batsm en on Tuesday m orning fo r an addition of six, so that after all N otts on ly had a lead o f seventeen runs. W o o d co ck ’s bow ling w as quite ou t o f the com m on. H e took eight w ick ets for 67 runs and hit the stum ps n o less than six tim es. W hen L eicestershire w ent in a second tim e, Mr. D e T rafford w as in his best vein for hitting and 85 had been m ade fo r the first w icked, w hen H olland, w ho w as responsible for only eighteen of th e num ber, w as out. A. L orrim er a n d T om lin a*so lent their captain useful assistance, the form er helping to add 41 fo r the second, the latter 43 for the third w icket. Mr. D e T rafford w as third out at 169, o f w h ich he had con tribu ted 89. H e w as at the w ickets tw o hours and a quarter, and, except for a har>i ch a n ce in the long-field w hen he had g ot five, his in nings was absolutely faultless. M r. D . L orrim er and W arren m ade another stand, and 200 w as up at one tim e w ith only fo u r batsm en out. W hen G unn w ent on to bow l, how ever, the end soon cam e.
