JULY 26, 1894 OBICKETs A WEESL tt BECORD OF THE eAME* 277 Y O R K S H IR E v. S O M E R S E T S H IR E . The S om ersetshire eleven, a fter being beaten by L ancashire at O ld 'r a ffo r d o n T uesday in a day, journeyed on to >- uddersfield fo r their first m atch of the season w ith Y orkshire, w h ich was fixed to com m en ce on 'I hursday. O ddly enough, the result was p recisely the sam p, and fo r the second tim e in su ccession Som ersetshire fou n d them selves w ith the unenviable d istin ction o f having a m atch begun and finished in the sam e day. S om erset shire w on th e toss, but the w icket, as w as on ly to be expected, did n ot play w ell after the recent rains. H irst in particular g ot up very aw kw ardly at tim es, and W ainw right and he proved so effec tive th a t in an hour and tw enty m inutes the innings w as over fo r a total o f 74. H irst's fow lin g figures w ere rem arkable. In thirty-one b alls he took five w ickets, and a t a cost o f only nine runs. Y orkshire in their turn began n on e too favourably, losing three g ood t atsm en in th e tw enty m inutes b efore lu ncheon fo r 26 runs. O n the resum ption, after B row n ’s dism issal, L o rd H aw ke and Peel played excellent cricket, and 55 w ere added before L ord H aw ke, w ho h ad m ade 56 o u t o f 101 w ithout a chance, w as bow led. T hen W ainw right. M oor house, and M ounsey w ere soon out, and w ith seven w ickets dow n fo r 123 it did n ot look a fter all as if Y orkshire w ould get a very lon g lead. Som e vigorous hitting b y H irst ju st at the finish, h ow ever, w as o f great service, and w hen ih e tenth w icket fell S om ersetshire w ere 99 behind W ith just a little under an hour and a h alf left fo r play it hardly look ed as if S om ersetshire w ould t e got out a secon d tim e in the day. Still, so successful w ere H irst and W ainw right again that b y six o’clo ck eigh t w ickets had fa llen fo r 68. Som e vigorous hitting b y T yler produ ced a little excite m ent, but it w as soon over, and w hen he w as out at 6.25 Y orkshire had w on by an innings and five runs. H irst’s all-round crick et w as the featu re of the m atch . Besides taking ten w ickets for 53 runs, he scored 31 w ith ou t being out. S o m e r se t . F irst Inning?. Mr. V . T . T h e early part o f th e m a tch betw een these coun ties, begun at M aidstone on T hursday, had gone so m u ch in favour o f K ent that th* ir defeat seem ed very im probable. In th is case, as it was, the unexpected happened, and N otis played up so w ell th a t th e result w as a m ost creditable v ictory fo r them w ith only 13 runs in hand. O w ing to rain a start could n ot b e m ade till p a st one o ’clock , and then N otts, w ho w ent in first, found rungetting so difficult again st W a lter H earne and M artin that the innings on ly realised 47. T hanks to th e batting o f Mr. M ason and M essrs. W ilson and P erkins, th e N otts to ta l w as passed by K ent in a little over h a lf an hour, and w ith only tw o batsm en out.
