Cricket 1894
JULY 26, 1894 m iasm* a w e e k l y b e c o r b o f t h e game* 275 is preposterous that they should rank below matches played by Gloucestershire and Sussex. I suppose ib is necessary that every county should give a rest to their players from time to tim e; have you not'ced that the best men are generally let off when a second-rate county is being met? How often when a first-class county is the;r opponent? R ich ardson and W .W. were not wanted against Leicfster^hi'e. “ Oh! it doesn’t matter a to:s of a button whether we win or lose; we sbaVt drop a single point.’’ Is there no such thing 8s prestige, reputation, and the like in cricket? I cannot tolerate this attitude of contempt towards any opponent. If it’s worth our while to play any game, it’s worth our while to strain every muscle to win. This is not aimed at Surrey, though Surrey may have caused me thus to speak out. 1 hope to score by remarking that Surrey’s innings.of 35 is the smallest they have scored since 1886: then they stopped chort at 20,and also against Leicestershire. In that match, plajed at Leicester, too, Brock well failed to score in either innings, and Leicestershire won then, thanks largely to Pougher, who took thirteen wickets for 54 luns, as against eleven for 57 last week. “ Verily, there is nothing new under the sun.” Bravo, Notts! W on just on the post. But a great victory, notwithstanding, brought about by bowling rather than by batting. Gunn’s aggregate of CO alone was conspicu ous, but Flower?, as t gainst Lancashire at Trent Bridge (8 wickets for 21 runs), put in some splendid ball-work—97 for 5—Attewell, as against Lancashire, seconding him most effectively with 7 for GO. But Walter Hearne heat them both—12 for 72, 10 being clean bowled ; he had Flowers, Wright, and Pike both times. T o fail when only 66 runs were wanted must have proved a terrible facer to the supporters of Kent. But see where their eak spot lay ; Notts gave away 5 extras, Kent 27 —a difference of 22 points, or just 9 in excess of the runs Kent found themselves short of at the finish. They deserved to lose, 27 runs out of an aggregate of 175 form a ridiculous proportion for extras. Who was to blame ? Anyhow, Kent’s chance of the championship has now almost disappeared. J.
