D erbyshire w as sadly out o f lu ck on the occa sion of the return m a tch w ith Surrey, w h ich ought to have been com m en ced at D erby on M onday. H eavy rain prevented the delivery o f a ta ll that day, and on the follow in g m orning, ow ing to cir cum stances over w hich the D erbyshire authorities had n o control, they had som e difficulty i a com pleting their eleven. E vans, w ho had been b ow l ing w ell in recent m atches, fou n d h im self too unw ell at the last m om ent to play, and to m ake m atters w orse H ulm e w as so in censed at a rem ark m ade to him by a professional of h is ow n side that he absolutely refused, in spite o f every argum ent, to take part in th e m atch. B esides this pair, M r. S. H. E vershed w as still unable to play, so that D erbyshire w as in a rather bad w ay. In this em ergency th e executive had to fa ll back on Mr. W . B. D olacom be and W iddow son, a grou n d m an w h o had beea bow ing wi h som e success in loca l m atch es. Mr. W . W . R ead w on the toss fo r Surrey, w h o w ere w ith ou t M r.K ey and L ock w ood , and although Ihe w icket w as slow ^nd never very easy, th e D erby shire eleven had a 1 >ng outin g. A yres and A bel w ere in nearly h a lf an hour fo r 12, b u t Mr. J ephson and A bel m a de a better show , and 42 w ere added before th e am ateur w as caught. A bel, w ho had been m eanw hile m issed at slip, had B rockw ell as his n ext partner, and w ith tw o in terruptions, one fo r lunch, the oth er o f forty m inu tes from rain, th e partnership, w h ich had lasted an hour and a half, realised £5 runs. M aurice Read, w ho cam e next, in trodu ced som e life in to the g im e, and although pla y had tw ice to be suspended fro m show ers, runs a fter a tim e cam e freely. A bel, stim ulated b y his partner’s exam ple, played faster cricket, and at the end of the day the tw o batsm en w ere still in, having then added 133. Abel, w ho had been b a tticg fo r nearly five hours, w as n ot ou t 112, and Bead n o to u t 74. R a in p evented a ' esum ption yesterday b efore noon, and then R ead, w ho had added 10 was cau gh t at the w icket.H eh ad played free and attrac tive crick et and his 84 w as w ithout a blem ish. A bel also added ten b efore his tim e cam e. H e was batting altogether fo r five hours, and taking into a ccou n t the fa ct that the w icket w as slow and the various interruptions from rain, his 1?2 w as alto gether a h ghly com m en d able display of w atchful cricket, under n ot th e m ost favou rable circu m stances. E ven then, the end w as n o t at hand, and indeed 62 w ere added before the innings, w hich had lusted nearly seven hours, ca m e to a close. A s Surrey w ere i.ot ou t till half-past three oV lock. there w as no ch an ce o f finishing th e m atch . Still there w as tim e en ou gh to get D erbyshire out once, and w ith th e com p letion o f th eir in nings the m atch w as draw n. N one o f the rest, how ever, did a nything against the bow ling of R ich a rd son and Sm ith, and the aggregate only am oun ed to 89 T h e tw o bow lers nam ed, divided the ten w ickets equally, though Sm ith had rather the better figures. A fte r the ex cel’ent show m ade t y th e W arw ick shire eleven in th e first m atch at birm in gh am , it w as oniy natural that a ddition al in terest shuuld be cen tred in the return, begun at bheffi^ld cn M onday. U nfortunately, the rain w h ich p re vailed over E ngland that day affected tb e ground m aterially, so that the crick et w as n ot seen under the sam e con d ition s as at B irm ingham . A co m m encem ent w as n ot po3sible till nearly fou r o ’clo ck on M onday afternoon and th en W arw ick shire, w ho had w on th e toss, w ere in and out w ithin the tim e that rem ained. T h e batsm en had n ot, as can b e im agined, a very essy task c f it, and th e innings, w h ich lasted alt gether tw o hours and a quarter, was chiefly notable fo r the free hitting o f D iver and L illey, and the careful crick et o f W . G. Q uaife, w ho w as in an h ou r and a h a lf fo r 20 Pt’el took five w ickets fo r 29, and F o?ter fou r fo r the sam e num ber. On T uesday m orning, th ou , h the w icket w as difficult, the Y orkshire < atsm en were m ostly seen to fair advantage. H irst and H un ter, w h o had been pu t in fo r the te 1 m inutes over night, scored freely 011 the resum ption, and the fo r m er b y vigorous hitting m ade 2 / o f 44 got on the fa ll o f th e first w icket. Still, P allett’s bow ling required a lo t o f w atching, and h a lf the side w ere ou t fo r an addition o f only 34 runs. Subsequently, how ever, the b est crick et o f the day w as s.en , and besides P eel, M oorhouse, L ord H aw ke, and M ou osey ,T e iton, o f Castleford, w ho had taken M r. F . S. J ack son ’s p lace in th e eleven, and F oster m ade a useful staod, th e last w icket adding 36. P allett, w h o kept up an end through out, aud took six w ickets, really bow led better th a n his figures w ould im p ly. W arw ickshire, w ho w ere in a m in ority o f 113 on the first innings, had m ade six runs w ith ou t the loss o f a w icket, w hen heavy rain stopped play as it proved fo r the day. M ore rain fell in Sheffield yesterday m orning, and the gam e cou id n o t be resum ed till fou r o'clock . E ven then it seem ed as if :th ere w ou ld 1e suffi cien t tim e to finish the m atch, and W ainw right, helped b y the w icket, bow led with tu ch effect, th a t eight w ickets w ere dow n fo r 53 W h en the gam e w as apparen tly lost, how ever, Shilton and P allett becam e pattners, and their plucky cricket s*ved the side from defeat.
