T h ou gh u ntilnearly the finish o f Y orkshire’s first i .nings, the play in the return m a tch betw een t lese counties, begun at H alifax on T hursday, did n ot fa vou r either m u ch , th e gam e subsequently w ent all in favour o f Y orkshire. T h e first day saw t 2 com p letion of an in nings by each eleven,w ith an advantage o f ul runs to Y orkshire. 'Jh is lead w as chiefly due to th e last tw o batsm en, H irst and E arnshaw , and, indeed, th e tenth w icket added no less than 61 runs. On F riday, thougli th e gam e w as several tim es in terrupted b y rain, the cricket generally w as fu ll o f interest. T h e early batsm en o f E ssex fared bad ly in the m orning, and though M r. O w en and B urns pu t on 55 fo r th e fifth partnership, w hen the sixth fell the in-side w ere on ly 31 on S om e vigorou s h itt'n g by M essrs. K ortright and H iggins resulted in the a ddition o f 50 in a little over h a lf an hour, and as M ead and M r. H eatley assisted the scora to the tune o f 43 fo r th e ninth w icket, th e total ultim ately reached 391. M r. K ortrigh t’s t2 in clu ded tw o h its from W ain w righ t fo r six apiece Y orkshire w ent in soon after five o ’clo ck on F riday fo r th e fou rth innings, w ith 144 to w in. R a in interfered so m aterially w ith th :s m atch, begun at the O val on '1 huraday, th a t w hen stum ps w ere finally draw n on Saturday afternoon on ly eighteen w ickets h a d fallen. T h e rain fall of T hursday m orning caused the ground to be slow at th e outset, and, in w inning the toss, it look ed as if L eicestersh ire w ould get a t ig advantage. A s it was, excepting the captain , w ho w hile he w as in m ade 47 o u t o f 74 w ith ch aracteristic vigour, n o one else offered any real resistance to the Surrey b ow l­ ing. R ichardson, w ho had n ot played since the M iddlesex m atch at L o rd ’s, reappeared in the Surrey eleven, and w ith success. T h ou gh he w as n ot p u t on till 53 had been g ot, he took fo u r o f the last eight w ickets, and at a cost o f on ly eleven runs. T he innings, w hich, ow ing to the w et, did n ot begin till ten m inu tes past fou r o ’clock, had lasted a little over tw o hours ith on ly five m inu tes left fo r play, M r. K ey sent in R ich ard son and M arshall, and w hen P ough er b ow led the latter in his first over, stum ps w ere draw n fo r the day. On F riday, ow ing to th e rain, play w as lim ited to tw o sh ort period s of tw enty and ten m inutes. Still, this h a lf hour, w hich produ ced 24 runs, w as fa tal to th ree m ore Surrey batsm en, Abel, A yres, and R ichardson, th e la st tw o o f th em stupidly run out. W ith on ly i7 up fo r fou r w ickets, th in gs did n ot look pa rticu ­ larly w ell fo r Surrey w hen a start w as m ade on Saturday m orning, and w ith M essrs. R ead and J eph son dism issed fo r an addition o f fou r­ teen the advantage seem ed to be all w ith L eicestersh ire. Som e very fine cricket by B rock ­ w ell and M aurice R ead, how ever, entirely altered th e appearance o f th e gam e. T h e w icket w as all again st run-getting, and P ough er bow led w ith such ju dgm en t th a t the batsm en had every­ thin g again st them . E xcep tin g one alm ost im p os­ sible chance to B rockw ell, though, neither m ade a m istake, and 68 had been added w hen R ead w as ca u gh t at the w icket, M r. K ey had hardly com e in before rain began to descend heavily, and w ith a subsequent hailstorm , th e ground w as soon in parts under water. P lay w as stopped soon after one o ’clock , and though, a fter abou t tw o hours, th e sunl cam e out, th e w icket up to nearly five o ’clo ck had recovered so little that it w as deter­ m ined to give up the gam e.
