Cricket 1894

JtJLY 19, 1894 CRICKET i A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAM®, 259 dropping them, and then engaging them again. Might they not persevere with certain men who show promise, even though at first they fail repeatedly. There is nothing more fatal to success in a young player than the suspicion that one or two failures will result in his removal from a team. Be sure to give all a full trial. Gunn’s scoring was contagious - at any rate, the elder Palairet, like Gunn in the second innings, scored more than half the total of his side. Onehundred and nineteen was a brilliant effort; to which lbw was nothing less than an anti-climax. Is the report correct that the last wicket added 50 runs, of which the parson stumper scored only four? It is delightful that the old Oxford captain has inaugurated his new career so happily. We wish him and his all possible prosperity. I have often thought, ever since W .G. took his bride to Australia, that cricketing is about the best way of spending the honeymoon. If I had my time over again, I certainly would arrange matters on these lines. Friends have so often told m.e that they were glad to get hom e; they would not say so were cricket thrown in. I try to suggest, that owing to these changes from time to time, a Married v. Single match might come off every five years. P.S.—What if the Australian Cricket Council rejects the new law which the M.C.C. have just passed. They m igh t; what then? H O N O R O kK v . H O LB O R N .—P layed at H onor O ak o n July 14.
