A s th e first m atch o f the season betw een the tw o coun ties had on ly ended in fa vou r o f Y ork shire, a fter a hard fight, b y the narrow m argin of three w ickets, the return, begun at L eeds on M onday, w as invested w ith con siderable interest, particularly after the im p roved form N otts had been show ing in its recent engagem ents. In this instance, though, the N otts eleven w ere ou t of luck, as in addition to A rthur Shrew sbury neither Mr. D ixon nor Mr. R ob in son w ere able to play, Y orkshire w ere, on th e oth er hand, fortunate enough to w in the toss, and, w ith a bad light at tim es and tw o heavy show ers, did w ell to reach a total o f 220. F or this, th ey w ere m ainly indebted to Mr. Jack son at the outset, and later on to a very usefu l stand b y B row n and T unnicliffe. T h e tw o profession als pu t on 89 runs w hile they w ere together b y capital cricket. B row n ’s 72 w as an innings o f great m erit under the circum stan ces. H e batted w ith great confidence as w ell as judgm ent, and his play w as g-n erally attractive. N otts had a little over a quarter o f an h ou r fo r batting on M onday evening, and in th a t tim e D aft and Mr. H ow itt pu t on seventeen runs. O n tbe follow in g m orniD g F oster's bow lin g proved very effective, so m u ch so, indeed, that in spite o f tw o useful scores b y Mr. H ow itt and G unn, h a lf th e side w ere out fo r on ly fifty-niDe runs. A determ ined stand by M r. W righ t and A ttew ell, how ever, im p roved the position m aterially fo r N otts, and at luncheon tim e on T uesday, the total had been raised to J53 w ith b oth batsm en still in. On r sum ing, how ever, a separation w as soon effected, and then H irst and F oster soon brought the innings to a close fo r an addition o f 45 runs. M r. W right and A ttew ell b oth deserved the highest praise fo r their plucky crick et at a tim e w hen thin gs had a lto gether against their side. Y orkshire open ed their second in nings w ith an advantage o f 22 runs, and this tim e M essrs. Sellers and Jackson began so w ell, that 77 h ad been g ot before the form er, w h o had on ly m ade 21 o f the num ber, w as out. M ounsey, w ho follow ed Mr. Sellers, w as again unfortunate, b u t B row n p roved a u sefu l partner fo r his captain, and in spite o f frequent bow ling changes the tw o batsm en w ere still in at the end o f the day. In a little over tw o hours and a h alf,Y orkshire had m ade 233 fo r tw o w ickets, and o f these M r. Jack son had con tribu ted 136 w ith ou t a chance. Y esterday the Y orkshire b attin g did n ot up h old the prom ise of the previous afternoon. Thirty-five runs on ly had been added at a cost o f five w ickets w hen W ain w right and B irst becam e partners. T h e tw o professionals, how ever, offered a vigorous resis tance, and 62 runs h a d been put on fo r the partnership, w hen M r. Jackson closed his innings w ith the total 330 fo r seven w ickets. T h is left N otts w ith 353 to w in, and at lu n ch eon tim e they had m ade 32 o f them fo r the loss o f M r. right’s w icket. A t the in terval M r. H ow itt and G unn w ere n ot out, and though the form er w as soon afterw ards dism issed th e third w icket gave som e trouble. G unn and D aft played w ith the greatest care, and runs cam e at a very slow rate. Just after G unn had com p iled his fifty he put on e in to the hands o f M r. Sellers and retired a fter an innings o f ju st under tw o h ou rs’ duration In addition to D aft, F low ers and A ttew ell a so len t useful assis tan ce T h e last nam ed though cou ld find n o one to stay w ith him , and the later batsm en cou ld do so little w ith the bow lin g o f M r. Jackson and Peel, that th e total on ly reach ed 151, leaving York-, shire w ith an easy v ictory b y 201 runs. H ow m u ch o f this success w as due to th e all-round crick et o f M r. Jackson , the figures w ill show In addition to his aggregate o f 188, runs h e took five w ickets fo r 47 runs.
