L osin g the toss, G loucestershire h ad to take the field first, and, at on e tim e, seem ed in fo r a fairly lon g outing. W . G .’s bow ling, th nigh, proved too m u ch fo r the m ajority, and th 3 lis t fou r batsm en fell w ith ou t a run. W . G had a hand in all the ten w ickets, getting nine from his ow n bow ling, and ca tch in g th3 tenth fro m E . M . H is batting, too, wa3 the great featu re o f G loucestershire’s first innings. W ith fou r w icket3 dow n fo r 35 he w ent in, and he w as n ot ou t wh*?n the in nings closed, having scored 3 29—his s e o n d hundred of th e w eek. T hough th ey w ere 116 b ehind on the first in nings, th e b ou th A frican team played u p so pluckily w hen they w ent in again on F riday afternoon, that b y th e end o f the day th e score w as 193 fo r the loss o f on ly three w ickets. H earne had n u d e 103 (n ot ou t) w ith tw o chances, H a li- w ell 81, and on S aturday th e la tter in creased his score to 110. Sussex, w inning th e toss, m ade an excellent start, B ean and M arlow pu tting on 99 in seventy m inu t?s. M essrs. B rann, A rlington, and Som erset subsequently w ere seen to som e advan tage, and in the end the innings, w hich had lasted fou r h ours and fifty m inu tes, closed fo r 278. On M onday evening the S outh A frican s lost tw o of their b est batsm en for three, and on the fo il iw ing m orning they fared so b ad ly again st H um p h reys’ lobs, th a t in an hour and ten m inutes the innings w as over fo r 71. In th e follow -on M essrs. R ou t ledge, Sew ell, and H alliw ell offered a sturdy resistance to th e Sussex bow lers. H u m phreys, how ever, w as again successful, and, th ou sh the collectiv e result o f the S ou th A frican batting w as a total o f 210, Sussex w on easily enough b y nine w ickets.
