JULY 5, 1894 P IC K E T 'S A W E E K L Y BECOBI? O F THE GAM E . 231 THE TONBRIDGE WEEK. K E N T Y. L A N C A S H IR E . T h e T onbridge W eek ended on Saturday as it had began — auspiciously for K ent. F ollow ing up their creditable victory over M iddlesex, the K ent eleven finished up on Saturday w ith an equally good w in. this tim e over Lancashire, a fter an exciting finish. A s in th e previous m atch, Mr. M archan t w on the toss, and K ent, getting first use o f a good w icket, w ere batting three hours and ten m inutes fo r a total o f 251. O f this sum tw o bats m en, M essrs. M ason and W eigall, con tribu ted m ore than on e h alf. T he tw o am ateurs, w ho pu t on 119 fo r th e fou rth w icket, w ere both seen to great advantage, though neither in nings was free from m istake. Mr. M ason’s 102 was his first score of three figures in cou n ty cricket. H e ought to have been caught in the slips w hen h e had got 5, but, still, his Datting all round w as w orthy o f th e highest praise, and his fine up standing style w as m uch adm ired. L ancashire loss three o f their best bats m en on T hursday afternoon for 48, but B riggs and B aker gave a lo t of trouble, raising the tota l to 109 before p ay ceased for the day. On the follow ing m orning Briggs h it with great freedom , and 200 w ent u p w ith only another batsm an out. Subse quently, how ever, W a lter H earne bow led w ith rem arkable success. H e finished up the innings in successful style w ith th e hat trick, dism issing T honias.M old, and G oodw in w ith successive balls, and altogether took eight w ickets for 66 runs. B riggs ju st m anaged to rea ch his hundred. H e w as in tw o h ours and a half, and though he m ight have been caught at the w icket before he had scored, h is hitting all roun d w as quite up to his b est form . K ent had a lead o f 81 runs on the first hands, b u t w hen they w ent in again M old bow led to such effect that they lost m ost o f their advant age. Six w ickets w ere dow n for 51, and it w as only the plu ck y cricket of M essrs. W eigall and L e F lem ing, assisted by W right, that produ ced the fairly re sp ectable total of 148, th e last four w ickets adding 92 runs. M old took seven w ickets for 61, and a ltogether in the m atch th ifteen w ickets. L a n ca shire entered on the fou rth innings on F riday afternoon w ith 175 to w in, and w hen pla y ended th a t night the odd 75 had been got fo r the loss of fou r w ickets. T h e gam e w as then a little against L ancashire, but on the follow in g m orning Mr. M cL aren and Briggs added 40 by excellent cricket, and then the ch an ces were perhaps a trifle in their favour. M artin, how ever, bowled B riggs at 119, and w ith another run added also dism issed Mr. M cLaren, who h id played adm irable cricket w ith out a n yth in g like a m istake. A fter his dism issal, the end soon cam e, and w hen the tenth w icket fell at 144 K ent had won a ca p ita l victory by 30 runs. M artin’s bow ling helped greatly to this su cce ss O n Saturday m orning he took five w ick ets fo r 23, and ia tbe innings eight w ickets for 45 runs. A ltogether, the T onbridge W eek w as su ccessfu l as w ell as eDjoyable, and the evening entertainm ents added considerably to the attractions of the annual gathering. K e n t .
