Cricket 1894
214 CRICKET T A WEEKLY BECORD Otf THE GAME, JUNE 21, 1894 G l o u c e s t e r s h ir e v . S o m e r s e t s h ir e . Although without several of their best players, the Somersetshire eleven had been showing such promising all-round form, that their chances for the first match of the season against Gloucester shire, begun at Bristol on Thursday, were highly esteemed. As it happened, neither county had its full strength, as wnile Messrs. R O. N. Palairet and Challen as well as Mr. Wickham, were all away, Gloucestershire was also without Messrs. Newnham and Troup. Though the ground showed only slight traces of the recent fains, it was still so slow that Gloucestershire gained little or nothing by going in first. Mr. vVoods and Tyler both bowled with marked Success, and the innings, which lasted just under two hours and a half, only realised 123. Of the total of 113 from the bat the three Graces were responsible for 85. W.G. was hardly at his best in making his 34, but E.M. and W.G. junior both shaped well, and the latter got his runs in very creditable style. While E.M. was in the score was 103 with only five batsmen out, but after this Tyler bowled with great effect, and the last five Wickets only added 23. Somersetshire in their turn began inauspiciously, and mainly through the good bowling of Roberts four of the best batsmen were out for 48. Nichols helped Mr. Spurway to add 34, and on the former’s retirement, Mr. Bpurway found such a useful partner in Mr. Hill that 93 had been added by the end of the day by spirited cricket with both batsmen still in. On Friday morning, Mr. Hill was soon dismissed, but Mr. Spurway saw all the rest out, and was still in when the innings closed, after an addition of 78 to the overnight total. Messrs. Spurway and Hill had added 100 for the sixth wicket. Mr. Hill, who had made 58 of them, hit with great resolution, and if he had some little luck, his score was at least free from a real chance. Mr. Spurway’s 108 not out, though, was the feature of the inniogs. Going in first wicket down at 11, he was in while 242 runs were added. He was batting altogether for four hours, and his play thoughout was as noticeable for sound defence as for judicious hitting when an oppor tunity occurred. Moreover it was not marred by an actual chance. When Gloucestershire went in a second time, owing to a strain Nichols was unable to bowl, so that Somersetshire lost the help of one of its most reliable bowlers. Sti'l they did fairly well without him, and considering all things they were fortunate in being only three hours and a quarter in the field. E.M. again batted very well, and this time Mr. Ferris, who was at the wickets an hour and three-quarters, got his runs in his best style with only one mistake just before he was out. With only 82 to win Messrs. Palairet and Fowler knocked up 46 in a little over half an hour, and 75 had been got for the loss of only three tatsmen at the time for drawing stumps. As only seven runs were then wanted to win, it was expected the match would be finished on Friday evening. Mr. W . G. Grace, however, declined to go on till the following morning. Rain had fallen in the night, but the weather was quite fine on Saturday, and though Mr. Dunlop was out the first ball, the match was over in five minutes, leaving Somerset the winners by six wickets.
