Cricket 1894

212 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECOED OF T H E GAME; JUNE 21, 1894 LANCASHIRE y. SCfiEEY. Surrey took precisely the same eleven that had beaten Yorkshird earlier in the week, to Man chester on Thursday, for their first match of the season against Lancashire. The Lancashire executive found a place for Gjodwin, th ; left- handed bowler, who had been tried against Derby shire in the previous match, as well as for Mr Ains- cough of Ormskirk, a left-handed bat-man, who made his first appearance for the county m thii match. Surrey, though they were again unlucky in the tos->, were only fielding till just f t ter the luncheon int9ival on Thursday. Though the wicket- was a bit slow it helped the bowlers very little, and it was therefore a creditable perfor mance for Surrey to dismiss their opponents for a comparatively small total of 123. Richardson and Smith were again the facto s in Surrey’s success. W hei Lancashire took the field L 'ck- wood and Abel were 6een at their be3t, and in a little over an hour the pair put on 66 runs After Abel’s dismissal, Hayward was bowled by Briggs, and when Mold bowled the two Reads in succession four of the best batsmen were out for 98. Lockwood, who stayed till the total was 124, had made 57 by excellent cricket, certainly without a mistake till just before he was out. On his retirement, Brock well scored freely, and with Mr. Key 6 J runs were added ia the last forty-five minutes o j Thursday. Surrey’s total then was 187 for five wickets, but the later batsmen did so little on Friday morning, that the inninss was completed for an addition of only 27 runs. The failure of Surrey’s tail was due mainly to the effective bowling of r rigws, who got four of the last five wickets at a cost <f only 11 runs Lancashire going in again, in a minority of 91 runs, fared very badly before the bowling of Mchardson. Mr. McLaren, as before, was seeu to advantage, but in spite of his score of £6, four of the bes batsmen were out for 4•. Some spiri ed cricket by Briggs and Tinsley resulted in the addi tion of 51 runs, and when heavy rain sropped play forj,he day on Friday, the total was 1U4 for five wickets. The wicket on Saturday morning, it was evident, would favour the bowlers, and to get the remaining wickets of Lancashire out che«piy was of great importance to Surrey. This they did, as though Briggs added ten, the innings was finished for an addition of 31 runs With 42 to win Surrey began well, Abel and Lockwood put ting on 26 for the first wicket. Both were tnen dismissed and Mr. Jephson and Brockwell were also sent back, the former finely thrown out by Briggs, befo e the winnin: run was got. Surrey thus won with six wickets to spare. One of the best featu fs of the match was the excellent wicket keeping of Marshall. In Lancashire’s two innings there were only three extras, and in the two matches Surrey p ayed last week Marshall only let two Iyes. L a n c a s h ir e .
