Cricket 1894

JUNE 14, 1894 CRICKET: A WEEKI/t BEOOBD OF THE QAME0 107 LANCASHIRE V. MIDDLESEX. After a game of varying fortunes, and conse quently well-sustained interest to the last, Mid dlesex won this match on Saturday afternoon by the barest margin of one wicket. Mr. Crosfie'd won the toss for Lancashire, but decided to take the field, thinking no doubt that the in-side would have the worst of the wicket just recovering after the rain. As it was. the eariier batsmen of Middle sex were all fairly successful. In thirty-five minutes Messrs. W etbe and Stoddart put on 56 runs for the first wicket, and at the luncheon interval on Thursday the telegraph showed 112 for the loss of only three batsmen. Some capital cricket by Messrs. Lucas and Holey resulted in the addition of 45 runs for the fourth wicket, and another useful stand by Messrs. Hayman and McGregor, who put on 32, enabled Middlesex to reach a very creditable total of 206. The com mencement of Lancashire’s first innings was in no way indicative of the collective result. Mr. McLaren and Ward opened well with 41 tefore the amateur was out, and Sugg, who took his place, after a time shaped so well that 76.was up with on y one batsman ont. The last forty-five minutes were, however, full of disaster for the home team. In this short space Heame and Rawlin succeeded in getting rid of six batsmen for an addition of only fifteen runs, so that the first day closed with only 85 to Lancashire’s credit at a cost of seven u ickets. Forty-two were then required to save the fo'low-on, and as on Friday morning the three outstanding wickets were secured for an addition of fourteen, Middlesex were able to claim a lead cf 107on the first hands. As it was. thanks to the excellent batting of Mr. McLaren, Ward, and Sugg, Lancashire’s deficit was soon wiped off, and at the cost of one ticket. The amateur was out at 33, but Sugg hit in his most vigorous style when he settled down, and his partnership with Ward had produced 77 runs, when a ball from Hearne beat him.. After Ward, who was in two hours for his 38, had been bowled by Rawlin, Briggs and Baker hit freely with the result an addition of 54 i uns. The total at the fall of he fourth wicket was 177, but excepting Baker, who was only in a little over an hour for his 49, the rest of the batting presented little worthy of note, the last six wickets only realising 49 runs. With 120 to win Middlesex fared badly in the last seventy minutes on Friday. A slight rainfall had evidently affected the wicket to some extent. At all events Mold made the ball come back a great deal, and he bowled Messrs. Stoddart, Webbe, Foley, Lucas, and Hayman in ten overs at a cost of only si* runs. V' hen play ceased on Friday night Middlesex bad lost half their wickets for 38, so that the chances on the resumption on Saturday were apparently all in favour of Lancashire. Rain during the morn ing, however, had made the wicket easier, and to make matters worse for Lancashire, Briggs at mid-off, missed Mr. McGregor badly, when he had got seven runs. Thanks to this escape 55 were added before Rawlin was bowled, and as Messrs. Henery and McGregor were both out at 108, the game again was very even. West and Phillips added eight, and Hearne, the last man, sent the next ball to square leg just out of Tinsley’s reach into the reserved stand for four, winting the match amidst great excitement. In the match Mold took fifteen wickets for Lancashire. These were got at a cost ol just over seven and a half runs apiece. L ancashire . First Innitgs.
