A fter th ree days o f singularly interesting crick et S urrey succeeded in w inning their first m atch o f th e season against M iddlesex at the O val on Saturday aftern oon w ith five w ickets to spare. M iddlesex, w h o w ent in first, m ade a very p ro m isin g com m en cem en t, M etsrs. Stoddart and W eb be pu ttin g on 66 in forty m inu tes before the form er w as caught. M r. W ebbe h a d som e lu ck in his 52, bu t R aw lin, Mr. M cG regor, an d Mr. L u ca s all played w ell w ith the result a useful total o f 221. Surrey’s start w as in direct contra st w ith that of M iddlesex, and w ith fou r o f the best batsm en ou t for 53 thin gs look ed fa r from h opefu l for them . A bel, w ho had been playing w ith great care from the first, how ever, fou n d a reliable partner in M r. K ey, w ho m ade 35 ou t o f 56 w hile h e w as in, w ith th e result th at on T hursday n igh t 140 had been got for th e loss o f five w ickets. So far there w as little in th e gam e to favou r either side, and fo r th e lead th ey got Surrey had to thank A bel. B rockw ell stayed w ith him som e little tim e, and Sm ith played w ith great care and judgm ent. A b el’s battin g th ou gh eclipsed all the rest. G oing in, first, he w as n ot out at the finish o f the innings. H e h ad te e n in fou r hours and fifty m inutes. T hough n ot w ithout m istakes, it w as a m asterly display o f at first defence and later o f free cricket. A m on gst h is h its w ere one seven, all run out. T h ou gh in a m inority o f 79, runs the w icket w as in such fine con dition that Surrey were not th ou gh t to have very m u ch in hand. A s it was, M essrs. Stoddart, W ebbe, and F oley w ere dism issed w ith on ly a sin gle betw een them , and in spite o f a useful in nings o f 39 by Mr. H aym an, w hen the eighth w ick et fell M iddlesex w ere on ly tw o runs on. T h en cam e a startling change. Mr. L u ca s from the first h it w ith freedom , w hile P hillips kept a perfectly straight bat, playing generally defensive cricket. A m idst great excitem en t the score rose fast, and every change seem ed equally pow erless to effect a separation. A t last Mr. L u cas fell to a very fine running catch by M aurice R ead, b u t n ot till 149 runs had been added, the result o f an h ou r and three-quarters partnership. M r. L u cas, o f course, took som e risks and m ade som e fau lty strokes. Still his 97 w as a rem arkable p erform an ce considering th e condition o f the gam e, and as a display of plu ck y and confident battin g w orth y o f the highest praise. P hillips w as n o t ou t 67 overnight and u ltim ately carried ou t his bat. H e w as in tw o hours and tw enty m inu tes w ithout, as far as w e saw, a m istake. H is play on th e on-side especially w as very good, and his in n ings w as o f inestim able value to the side. W ith 188 to w in, Surrey had n o easy task, though the w icket w as still in excellent condition. A bel again shaped|well, bu t in spite o f som e very fine crick et t y M aurice R ead the m atter w as n ot decided till M r. K ey cam e in on the fall o f the fifth w icket. A fter th e first few overs the am ateur settled dow n to his w ork, and, scorin g fast, the m atch w as soon w on for Surrey w ith five w ick ets to spare. M aurice R ead’s 75 n ot ou t w as a particu larly fine in nings w ith ou t a m istake. M r. Jephson w as ou t in a cu riou s way.
