M iddlesex h a d on ’ y a m oderate side for their first m atch o f the season against G loucestershire, begun at L o rd ’s on M onday, w ith M essrs. M cG regor, H aym an a n d R . 8. L ucas, as w ell as P hillips, all o f w hom did such g ood service against Surreylast w eek, away. Still in w inning the toss they gained a great advan­ tage, on e w h icn practically w on them the m atch. O w ing to the rain fall overnight the w icket was slow at the outset, and, as th e ground w as, a total o f 223 w as a very creditable perform an ce, al­ th ou gh a show er in th e aftern oon m ade th e pitch easy again in th e m iddle o f th e in n in g s.,Mr. Stod­ dart as usual,m ade th e gam e lively at the start, but the te st crick et on the side w as show n by R aw lin. H e w as b attin g over tw o hours and a h a lf w ithout a ch an ce to spoil a m ost excellent innings. Board w as quite at his best b ehind th e w icket. H e dis­ m issed fou r batsm en all b y g ood catch es. By th e tim e G loucestershire w ent in the grou n d had begun to dry after the rain, and the batsm en had a very b ad tim e o f it. W . G. w as easily had at m id-off from the first ball, and w ith Mr. Troup, P ainter, and M essrs. F erris and E . M . G r*ce all o a t w ith th e total on ly 18, things look ed a bou t as bad as they cou ld look fo r the in side. M essrs. K itcat and L uard, how ever, played the excellent bow lin g o f R aw lin and H e irn e w ith confidence and judgm ent, and they added 84 before th e end of the day. T h ou gh the rain on ly adm itted o f thirty- five m in u tes’crick et on T uesday this w as sufficient to produ ce the dism issal o f five batsm en, 'ihe w icket again played falsely after the rain, and to such an extent th a t the five rem aining w ickets w ere g ot rid o f fo r an addition o f on ly tw en.y runs. H earne and Raw lin equally divid ed the t<-n tic k e ts , w ith a slight advantage to the form er. G loucestershire had to follow on 151 to th e bad, and after W . G ., w ho w ent in first w ith Kerris, had m ade a single, rain stopped play, as it turned out, fo r the day. Y esterday m orning, w ith a w icket fa st drying after the w et, G loucestershire had n o ch a n ce o f saving the gam e ex cep t by rain. As it w as H earne and Raw lin again m ade such good use o f their opportunities th a t th e m atch w as over in an hour and ten m iou tes, leaving M iddlesex the w inners b y an innings and 104 runs. Mr. K itcat alone got dou ble figures and th e w hole side w ere ou t fo r 47. R aw lin had an exceptionally fine analysis fo r th e m atch.
