As w as on ly to be expected, th e C ounty had th e best o f the gam e at all poin ts, and w on in the end w ith eight w ickets in hand. B row n, th e B edford shire professional, m ade his first appearance for M .C.C. in this m a tch and w ith success. H e w as in tw o hours and ten m inu tes in the first innings and carried ou t h is b a t fo r 64, m ade w ith ou t a chance. T om lin ’s b rillian t h ittin g w as the one feature o f L eicestersh ire’s first innings. H e ought to have been caught a t m id on w hen he had got 16, and again at 40 he ought to have been out. Still his 140 w as, on the w hole, an excep tion al display o f vigorous and attractive cricket. In p roof of th e rapidity o f h is scorin g, it need on ly be stated th a t he m ade h is run s in tw o hours and forty m inutes. F ollow in g on in a m in ority o f 162 M .C.C. m ade a g ood start, thanks to B arnes and M r. B ohlen, w ho pu t on 82 in forty-five m inutes fo r the first w icket. B arnes and Mr. R am say subsequently added 91, and the form erstayed till 22 -i had been g ot, w hen h e w asou t the sixth w icket. G race had a fairly strong side to help h im against th e U n iversity in this m a tch at C am bridge, in th e la tter part o f last w eek. It in clu ded his son, w ho pla yed a very useful innings in the F reshm en’s m atch . C am bridge, w h o w ent in first, had lost five w ickets fo r 85 b y lu n ch eon tim e on T h u rsd a y, and it w as on ly a fine innings by P erkins that m ade th e score eventually respec table. A s it w as, he m ade 88 ou t o f 181 from the bat, and a com p arison o f his m eth ods w ith those o f C rabtree w ill b e show n by the fa ct that he m ade his runs in an hour and a h&lf, w hile C rab tree w as in a q u arter o f an hour lon ger fo r 27. W h en M .C.C. w ent in, W .G. ju n ior, w h o b atted first, w as u n fortu n ately dism issed w ith ou t a run. T h e stand o f h is fath er w ith C hatterton, how ever, a m ply repaid th e sp ecta tors fo r this disappoint m ent. B oth b atsm en pla yed faultless cricket, w ith th e result an addition o f 256 run s fo r the secon d w icket. W .G . had been in fo r fou r hours and a quarter, C hatterton fou r hours and a half. Subsequently M r. K em p b atted w ell, and w ith u sefu l assistance f om M r. H ornsby, Storer, D avidson , and M ead, th e ultim ate result w as a tota l o f 390. T h is le ft C am bridge w ith 201 to save an innings defeat, and so w ell did D ouglas and M itch ell score, th a t 61 had been g ot in forty m in u tes w hen D ouglas w as bow led. Writh som e lu ck F ield and M itchell added 48, and F iid a y ’s crick et ended w ith the U niversity’s score 109 fo r tw o w ickets. R a in on Saturday m orning in ter fered considerably w ith the progress o f the gam e. W .G .’s bow ling, how ever, proved so effective that non e o f the rem aining batsm en did m uch, the eigh t outstanding w ickets on ly adding 120.
