T he Y orkshire eleven, w h o began the season au spiciou sly w ith a decisive v icto ry over N otts, had a secon d and again easy w in over Sussex at B righ ton on F riday last. T h u rsda y’s crick et w ent all in fa v ou r of Y orkshire, w h o, after dism issing their op p on en ts fo r 114, secured 247 fo r the loss of on ly th ree batsm en. A t one tim e Sussex had 70 u p w ith on ly on e batsm an ou t, and they w ere singularly unfortunate in losin g B ean ow ing to an in jury to his hand w hen h e w as apparently w ell in. T h e great feature o f t h 3 day w as the brilliant b attin g o f M r. Jackson . H e w as seen quite.at his best, and h is score o f 131, w h ich on ly occu pied him tw o h ou rs and tw enty m inutes, was the ou t­ com e o f free and a ttractive crick et absolu tely w ithout a fau lt. T uim icliffe, w h o had h it w ith vigour overnight, 1rou gh t h is score on F riday to 78, th ou gh the latter part o f his ion in gs w as m arred b y a ch an ce in th e lo g field. T h e later w ickets did little, so that th e innings closed on F riday fo r an addition of 81 runs, Sussex had to follow -on in a m in ority o f 214, and their ch a n ces w ere still further reduced b y an a ccid en t to M arlow , w h o had also in jured h is hand in fielding. W ith tw o batsm en like B ean and M arlow away, Y orkshire w ere assured o f an easy w in, and it said m u ch fo r th e h om e team th a t th ey w ere able to m ake so g ood a show under su ch disadvantage. M r. N ew ham ’s 75 w as the feature o f the innings, though H um p h reys and G uttridge were seen to advantage at th e finish, th e latter w ith som e vigorous hitting. M r. N ew ham 's 75, w h ich took him ju st on tw o hours, w as on ly spoiled b y one difficult chance. Y orkshire w on in the end b y an innings and thirty-five runs.
