R ain, w h ich had in terfered w ith the progress of this gam e at O xford on th e secon d day (T uesday), brought th e m a tch to a prem ature close yesterday. T hough O xford had first k n ock on a run-getting w icket, the early batsm en gave such a dis appointing show , that at the lu n ch eon in terval on M onday h a lf th e side w ere ou t w ith on ly 82 up. F ortunately the latter part o f th e innings w as of quite a different ch a ra cter M ordaunt and P hillips b oth b atted w ith great freedom and 75 w ere added in about fifty m inutes. P athurst subsequently len t P h illips useful help, so m u ch so that 54 w ere put on in a bou t tb e sam e n um ber o f m inutes. E xcep tin g fo r one chance, w hen h e had m ade 46, P hil ip s’ 78 w as w ith ou t a m istake. A fter his dism issal th e end soon cam e, th e last four w ickets only adding 25 runs. W hen M r. W eb be’s team w ent in on T uesday th e sp ectators had a taste of M r. H ew ett’s great pow ers o f hitting So severely did he punish the O xford bow ling that tw o hours produced tw o hundred runs. Mr. B ew ett, w h o w ent in first, w as fifth out. In tw o hours he had m ade )10 runs, w h ich of itself w ill show the w ay he m ust have h it all roun d the w icket. H e gave a difficult ch an ce w hen he had g ot tw elve, and he m ight have been caught at the w icket w hen he had reached 89. O therw ise there w as n o blem ish to detract fro m a rem arkable display o f resolute and fearless cricket. T he bow ling o f D . H. F orb es w as th e te st on tha O xford side. G oing in first, Mr. D ixon w as sixth ou t w ith the total at 190. H e w as b attin g altogether three hours and a h alf, and though he m ight have been caught tw ice in the latter part o f his innings there w as n o fa u lt to m ar an excellent display o f cricket till he had g ot 68. W hitehead follow ed u p his previous bow hn g successes w ith another g ood per form an ce, taking eight o f the ten w ickets io r 95 ruus. W arw ickshire,w ho h a d m ade seven w ith ou t the loss of a w icket on M onday night, lost three of their r est b atsm en on T uesday m orning fo r 26. W . G. Q uaife, w ho show ed such excellen t batting against Surrey at the O val, w as again seen to the best advantage. L aw helped h im to add 99 fo r the fou rth w icket, and th en Q uaife w as ou t fo r a capital in nings o f 58, lasting ju st over tw o h ours L aw con tin u ed to play very steadily, w hile Mr. D ocker, after being let o ff m ore than ( nee, hit freely. T h e tw o batsm en added 85 before L aw , w ho had been in three hours and ten m inutes, w as caught. P is 68 w as a painstaking display of cricket. M r. D ocker, a fter m aking 70 in an h our and fifty m inutes, w ith a lo t o f lu ck at the start, w as ou t at 235, and th e innings ultim ately cam e to an end for 2.8, o r 10runs to th e g ood N otts had fifty m inutes left fo r batting on T uesday night, and in this tim e Mr. R obin son and P ike put on 55 runs w ith ou t a w icket. O w ing to rain on ly a quarter o f an hour’s play w as possib le yesterday before lu ncheon, in w h ich tim e the n o t ou ts added 12 runs. Mr. R obinson w as first on t at 74, and after his dism issal little w as d m e against th e b o w lirg o f S hilton and W hitehead Pine, w ho had played ; excellent cricket, com p leted h is 50, b u t o f the rest B arnes and G unn alone g ot dou ble figures, and the last nine w ickets on ly added 72 runs L eft w ith 137 to w in in a bou t tw o hours,W arw ick shire had m ade 97 fo r the loss o f fou r batsm en w hen tim e w as up.
