Cricket 1894

MAY 24, 1894 PICKET? & WEEKLY BECOBI? OF THE GAME0 51 T H E U N IV E R S IT Y v. Y O R K S H IR E . L ord H aw ke and M r. Jackson w ere playing else w here, so th a t Y orkshire h a d n o t quite its best side fo r th is m atch, begun at C am bridge on M on- ; day. S till the C ounty w as strong enough to test the all-round cu ck e t o f the U niversity, and the excellent fight m ade b y the la tter w as, therefore, the m ore satisfactory. C am bridge, w ho w ent in first, w ere dism issed fo r a to ta l o f 155. T h e inn ings, w h ich lasted tw o h ours and fifty m inutes, only presented one n otable feature in the batting o f th e F reshm an, F. M i chell. G oing in first, he very nearly w ent through the innings, being ninth ou t w ith th e total at 145. H s p ’ ay w as through ou t o f th e m ost attractive kind, w ith a great variety o f strokes, and the in nings fully confirm ed the rep u tation he has already gained as an excep tion ally prom ising bat. E x ce p t fo r tw o rather narrow escapes ju st before he w as out, he w as h ardly ever a t fault. M oderate as the U niver sity’s tota l w as, it w as m ore than enough for the C ounty. B row n, indeed, w as the only on e to m ake any very lengthy stay. H e w as in an hour and three-quarters w ith ou t a ch an ce o f any kind. M oorhouse h a d unfortunately hurt him self w hile bow ling earlier in the day, so that Y orkshire batted on e short. F requent show ers reduced the period o f actu al play on T u esday to a bou t tw o hours. S till the tim e w as lo n g enough to m a b le the U niversity to m ake a g ood score. T h e w et ball and ground han dicapp ed the Yorts shire bow lers severely, and C am bridge m ade runs rapidly. T h ou gh D ouglas and L atham b oth played w ell, M itchell’s b attin g w as again the striking feature. O f 178 got w hile h e w as in he had m ade 92, and this tim e there w as n ot a fault o f any kind during his in nings of tw o hours. C om m en cin g yesterday w ith 186 u p fo r fou r w ickets, P erkins and the broth ers D ruce scored freely, w ith th e resu lt that the in nings w as closed w hen 340 appeared fo r the loss o f seven w ickets. W ith 349 to w in, and on ly three hours left fo r play, Y orksh ire's o n 'y ch a r ce w as a draw n gam e. W ard all and T unnicliffe, w h o w ent in first, pu t on runs at a great rate, m aking 50 in the first h alf- hour. L a ter on M ounsey w as a so seen to advantage w i h a very useful inDings of 54. Still the U niversity had a little in h in d and w ltn M oorhouse asain u n a -le to b a t Y ork hire w ith all ou t for 229, leaving Cam bridge the w inners by 119 ri ns.
