MAY 24, 1894 {ffilCKSiT* A WEEKL'i BECOBB OF THE GAME, 149 L A N C A S H IR E v. K E N T . A fter a gam e o f m any fluctuations, K ent suc ceeded in w inning th eir first m atch of the season w ith L «n cash ire on Saturday at M anchester w ilh three w ickets to spare. A t th e ou tset on T h u rs day the ground w as rather slow from the rain o f the previous day, and L an cash ire gained little or nothing b y goin g in first. M artin and W alter H earne " ere able to get som e help from the w icket in th e fore-part o f the day, and excepting A lbert W ard, none of the earlier batsm en did m uch. T he highest scorer fo r L ancashire w as Baker, w h o fo r th e third tim e in the w eek carried ou t his b a t, h is 60 n ot ou t w as an innings of great value, th ou gh it w as m arred b y three dis tin ct ch an ces to the w icket-keeper, cooing in against a total o f 18', the early batsm en o f K ent show ed u p so w ell that in the last hour and a h a lf on T hursday 69 w ere m ade fo r th e loss o f on ly tw o batsm en. On the resum ption on F riday, too Mr. * eigall and A lec H earne len t such u sefu1 assistance that the hundred w ent up w ith on ly three w ickets dow n. T h e later batsm en, how ever, did little against the bow lin g o f Briggs and M old, s i that after all the innings on ly p ro du ced a total o f 152. T h ou gh L an cash ire had a lead o f 29 runs to com m en ce their second innings, W ard received so little assistance from the earlier batsm en th a t on th e fa ll o f th e sixth w icket the total w as on ly 80. A t this ju n ctu re W ard, w ho had bee a batting from the first w ith great care, found a very valuable partner in T insley. T he la tter’s 43 w as a particularly useful innings, and thanks to it and to W ard, w h o w as n ot ou t 86, the close o f play on F riday saw 186 up, w ith tw o w ickets to fall. On Saturday m orning W ard w a bow led w ith ou t any addition to the score, an^ as ODly nine runs w ere pu t on the innings close^ for 195. W a rd ’s 86 w as w orth y o f th e highes^ praise. H e w as at th e w ickets altogether three* hours and forty m inutes, w ithout, as far as cou ld be seen, a m istake o f any kind. W anting 225 to w io, th ou gh the w icket w as faster than at any previous period o f the gam e, K ent h a d n o easy task. T hank s m ainly to A lec H earne, how ever, snch a prom ising start w as m ade that at lu ncheon on Saturday 120 had been got w ith on ly three batsm en out. T h e dism issal o f b o th G eorge H earne and W alter W righ t im m ediately on the resum ption gave L ancashire renew ed h op s, w ith h a lf th e Fide out, and 98 still to \*in Mr. March*>nt’s arrival to partner A lec H earne b rou gh t relief in som e of the form er’s m st vigorou s cricket, and 45 w ere added before H earne w as at last bow led. H is sixty w as m arred b y a ch an ce at 28. E x cep t fo r this one fau t he m ade n o m istake, and his innings w as o f inestim a* le value to th e side. W ith only W . H earne and N u ttall in reserve, and 45 yet to get, K en t’s ch a n ce * w ere still dou btful, w hen Martin join ed Mr. M archant. W ith som e slight luck, how ever, the form er stayed w hile his captain hit, and the runs w anted w ere g ot w ith ou t a n oth er w icket M r. M archan t’s 72 (not out) w as a very fine display o f cricket, under the circu m stan ces He m ade 72 o f th e last 119 runs in an h ou r and a h a 'f, and his resolute tatting fairly w on the m atch fo r K ent.
