T he ch oice of innings w as, as events proved, n o gain to G loucestershire, as the w icket, w h ich w as slow at th e outset, got m u ch better as th e gam e advanced. Still th e b attin g o f G loucestershire altogether w as very disappointing. W . G . w as unfortunate each tim e, and h is early dism issal, of cou rse, had a very p reju d icia l effect on the side. N on e the less, th e tw o bow lers deserve the greatest credit fo r a rem arkable achievem ent R ich ard son and Sm ith were unchanged through­ o u t b oth innings o f G loucestershire. A s the w ick et was, this w as quite an excep tion al per­ form an ce, O f the tw o, Sm ith, th e you n g left- handed bow ler, had the better figures, ten w ickets fo r 71 against nine w ickets fo r 99. Surrey, w ho began to bat ju st before lu n ch eon on T hursday, rem ained at the w ickets till tw enty m inu tes past on e o ’clock on the follow in g aft 'irnoon. T hough n ine o f the eleven g ot dou ble figures, th e ch ief features o f the lon g innings w ere the stands of M essrs. R ead and K ey, and B rockw ell and L o ck ­ w ood respectively. T hough the tw o am ateurs p u t on 105 lu ns. in ea ch case b y free a n d vigorous crick et, the partnership o f B rockw ell and L o ck ­ w ood w as even m ore produ ctive. N o less than 166 w ere added w hile they w ere together, and of these, L ock w ood , w ho played w ith m ore than ordinary care, only m ade 54, an innings w ith ou t a m istake. Still, the b est disp lay on th e side w as th a t of B rockw ell It w as th e first hundred he has ye m ade fo r Surrey, as w ell as, at the sam e lim e, the best in nings he h a s so far played. H is 107 only occu p ied tw o hours and tw enty m inutes, a n d his hitting all roun d w as m arked by great p ow er as w ell as ju dgm en t. Subsequently, how ever, B aw lin b ow led w ith great effect, so m u ch so that th e six ou tstan din g w ickets w ere d is­ m issed fo r an a ddition o f 51 runs.
