Cricket 1894

142 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME, MAY 17, 1894 LANCASHIRE v. YORKSH IRE . B r ig g s ’ B e n e f i t . Unfortunately for th9 deserving Lancashire cricketer to whom the proceeds of this match were devoted, the weather reduced the game at Manchester to a little more than one day. On Monday, though ther^ was slight rain in the morning the weather held up la4er on, so that there was a large crowd of about fifteen thousand. A wicket had been covered in anticipation of Briggs’ benefit, but Lord Hawke properly objected to this and another had to be used. Lancashire won the toss, but benefited little by their good luck. Ward, Mr. Hornby, Mr. Maclaren, and buig were all out without a run, and in an hour and a half the side were dismis:ed for a total of 50. Hirst and Peel were the Yorkshire bowlers, and the former was remarkably effective, his seven wickets only costing 25 runs. When they went in Yorkshire fared much better, and the outcome of an innings of three hours’ duration was a very creditable total of 152. A great part of the credit was due to the tail, as the last three batsmen just doubled the total. Mounsey, who was only played as a substitute for Mr. Sellars, played capitii cricket, and his 36 was the highest, as it was, perhaps, the best, innings of the day. On Tuesday Lancashire had 102 to save an innings defeat, and th >ugh they had 70 up with only half their wickets down they just failed to put Yorkshire in again. The chief cause of their failure at the finish was the bowling of Wainwright who, going on in place of Hirst, got the last three wickets in 29 balls at a cost of eight runs, baker, it will be seen, made 37 runs for Lancashire without being out in either innings Yorkshire won by an innings and four runs. In spite of the threatening weather 13,467 paid on the first day, and 6,544 on the second day. W itt subscriptions, it is hoped that Briggs will nett over a thousand poundp. L a n c a s h ir e .
