Cricket 1894

MAY 17, 1894 ORICESTs A WEEKLY EECORD OP TEE GAME, 133 CRICKET AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY. FIRST TWELVE v. NEXT SIXTEEN. The rain which interfered with most of the cricket at the end of last week did not spare Oxford. No play took p’ace on Friday at all, and with the game much interrupted on the first day there was no possibility at any time of a definite result. The majority of the Twelve, who batted first, failed to come up to anticipa tions. The exceptions were Foster, Palairet, and Bathurst. Palairet helped to put on fifty for the first wicket, but the best stand was while Foster and Bathurst were together. Foster played with great care. He was in about three hours, and his 64 was only marred by one chance, when he had made 15. Raikes, who had been the most successful bowler for the Sixteen, showed also some of the best batting. Smith, the Charterhouse Captain of 1892, though, was the highest scorer, and his innings of 30 was the most creditable on the side. Forbss, the Eton ('aptain of 1892, was seen to great advan tage as a fast bowler for the Twelve. His eight wickets averaged nine runs. T h e T n vslvj ;. R . C. N. The Cambridge Eleven made an excellent show at Cambridge at the end of last week in their first match against a strong side brought down by Mr. C. I. Thornton. P. H. Latham, the University captain, had only Douglas and Perkins of last year’s eleven to assist him, so that places had to be found for eight new men Of these six, E. Field, of Clifton, W. G. Druce, of Marlborough, J. J. Robinson, of Appleby, C G. Pope and G. J. L. Rudd, of Harrow, and J. Burroughs, of Shrewsbury, were seniors, of whom two or three had been tried for the eleven. The other two were Freshmen, F. Mitchell, of St. Peter’s School, York, who has been scoring very heavily in college matches, and J. A. Crocker, of Eton, who had bowled with some success in the trial matches. Mr. Thornton’s side, who went in first, found the wicket after the rain rather difficult, and the two fast bowlers, Robinson and Burrough, were so far successful at the outset as to get rid of W.G , Hewett, and Wright for only thirty runs. Over an hour’s rainfall caused the wicket subsequently to play more easily, and with a wet ball the Cambridge bowlers fared worse. Jackson and Ferris put on 83 for the fourth wicket, and Hill and Webbe also lent useful assistance. Just at the last the wicket began to help the bowlers again, and Robinson proved very efft 0 - tive, getting rid of four of the last five batsm n. With the dose of the innings Thursday’s cricket ended. On Friday the game progresses without stoppages till after 4 o’clock, when rain stopped play for the day. Still, while the match lasted some excellent batting was witnessed. Mitchell in the early part of the innings fully confirmed the high promise of his college cricket. He played in excellent style with plenty of freedom, and his 64 was a very attractive innings without a fault. Later o i Perkins hit with confidence and vigour, and when play was brought to a premature close on Friday afternoon he was still in with 63 to his credit. At that time Cambridge were 20 be hind with one wicket to fall, and there the game was left, as the heavv rain had so saturated the ground by Saturday morning that no further play was possible. M r .
