Cricket 1894
12&. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, MAY 10, 1894 M.C.C. & G. v. NOTTS. W ith the exception of the substitution of Mr. C. W . Wright for Chambers, Notts had identically the same side to represent it at Lord’s on Monday as that which had been beaten by Warwickshire at Trent Bridge on Saturday. On the other hand, M.C.C. had a strong eleven, with, as was expected, in the result another reverse for the county. Though they lost the toss, thanks to the good bowling of Mee and Attewell, Notts did so well at the outset on Monday that five of the best bats men of M.C.C. had been dismissed before luncheon for 89, On the resumption, after Moorhouse’s dismissal, Lord Hawke and Martin, by free hitting, with some luck, added 58, and the former was still in when the innings closed with the total at 180. When they went in Notts, with one exception, made a poor show against the bowling of M.C C. They were all out in an hour and half for 95, of which Flowers, who went in first and carried out his bat, contributed 67. It was a characteristic display of free cricket, not only without a charce, but with only one bad hit. J.T.Hearne and Martin equally divided the ten wickets. The latter’s figures, though, were much the better. Going on with four batsmen out at 76, he was mainly instrumental in getting rid of the last six wickets for an adoition of only nineteen runs. He got five of these last six wickets in thirty-five balls at a cost of only eight runs. Following on 85 to the bad Notts had made 27for the loss of Mr. Wright’s wicket when play ceased on Monday night. On Tuesday morning Martin again bowled with great success, so much so that when the seventh wicket fell the score had only been increased by 47 runs. Daft, who had been playing with great care, however, found a useful partner in Armstrong, and their partnership resulted in a very useful addition of 37 runs. The latter, too, was not out at the finish, h aviD g got his twenty runs in very fair style. Martin again had excep tionally good figures. His five wickets cost 22 runs, making altogether in the ma^ch ten wickets for 30 runs. With only 40 to win Marylebone lost Carpenter and Mr. De Trafford in the first over. Alec Hearne and Chatterton, however, were not so easily dis missed, and as they were both in at the finish M.C.C. won with eight wickets in hand. Chat terton was missed at point before he had scored, or the result would have been closer. M .C .C . a n d G r o u n d . First Innings.
