SIXTEEN FRESHMEN. Rain brought the third trial match at Oxford to a premature close, preventing auy play at all yesterday. The batting of the Freshmen was only of a moier^te character, and when play cease 1 on Tuesday night they still wanted 52 to save the innings with eight wickets to fall. The feature of the Eleven’s batting was the stand by Leveson-Gower and Phillips. These two put on 137 runs in an hour and a half. Hardswell, though he was the highest scorer f>r the Sixteen, was, this time, unsuccessful as a b »wler. On the other hand, Forbes’ fast bowling proved very effective. He kept] up hi* end well and his eight wickets only cost 81 runs. S ix t e e n F r e sh m e n . F irst Innings. C. J. B. W ebb, b B ath u rst 8 R . H. M itchell, run ou t ... 7 T . B . AMBRIDGE FRESHMENS MATCH. The Freshmen’s Match, which occupied the latter part of last week, was more satisfactory from a batting than a bowling standpoint. In the first three innings the totals were curi ously alike, as there was only a difference of the same number of runs between them. The two batsmen of whom most was expected, N. F. Druce, last year’s Marlborough Captain, and F. Mitchell of St. Peter’s School, York, whose phenomenal scoring has been one of the great features of the season so far, both came off. In the first innings of Mr. Douglas’ side, the feature was the batting of W.G. the younger. He made 88 by good cricket, if not in very taking style. The highest scorer in the match was Druce, whose aggregate for the two innings was exactly a hundred. In bowling Cobbold of Eton on the one side, and Gray and Crocker on the other were most successful. Gray in all took twelve wickets for 124 runs. Mr. Latham’s side won by 138 runs. M r .
