Cricket 1894

MAY 10, 1894 gRIOKETs A WEEKLY RECOBD OF THE 0AME 115 NOTTS v. WARW ICKSHIRE. The Warwickshire eleven signalised their promotion into the list of first class counties by a very creditable victory over Notts, at Nottingham, at the eDd of last week. The Nottinghamshire Committee, who had decided to leave Barnes and Sherwin out of the county team, were also prevented from claiming the services of both Shrewsbury and Gunn from illness. As a consequence, the eleven had to be filled up with less known players. Places were found for Mr. Howitt, Armstrong, Chambers, and Sharpe, who after three years’ probation with Surrey, made his first appear ance for the county of his birth. Going in first, Warwickshire were batting all the first day, and until twenty minutes to one on Friday morning. The innings, which had lasted over six hours and a half, was chiefly remarkable for a fine display by Mr. J. E. Hill. For over four hours and a half he played all the bowling of Notts with equal confidence and judgment. He finally carried out his bat, too, for 139, made without a real chance. A high wind helped the Warwickshire bowlers to some extent on Friday, and the earlier batsmen of Notts made such a poor show that half the side were out with only fifty up. Baguley stayed some little time with Daft, who also received some assistance from Mr. Robinson. Still, the only really noteworthy feature of the innings was the batting of Daft. After he settled down he played with consider able confidence, and his 54 was throughout a display of great merit. Following on in a minority of 202 Notts made 57 for the loss of Messrs. Howitt and Robinson in the hour and five minutes that remained for play on Friday. Fortunately for Notts the wicket continued to play easily on Saturday, and Whitehead, who had bowled with great success on the previous day, was freely punished. Daft was again seen to marked advantage, and his perform ance in the matoh (120 runs in the two innings) wasvery noteworthy for the first match of the season. Flowers and Mr. Dixon both played well, and at the finish Mee and Sharpe made a most determined stand, adding 49 for the last wicket. Left with 71 to win, War wickshire lost four good batsmen before the end c ime, so that Notts were beaten in the end by six wickets. W a r w ic k s h ir e . F i- st Innings. S econ d Innings. W .
