Cricket 1894

MAY 3, 1894 P IC K E T : A WEEKLY REC0B3P OF THE GAME, 103 Oh ! it was pitiful to see him pace Some grand arena of his former fame ; And watoh for triumph where in years of grace He smote his enemies with deadly aim. And now that he has put his armour by, Let Charity run like a river free ; None being perfeot, let his errois lie Within a casket under lock and key. To Nature he has paid the common debt So be the present with the past combined ; And in the future let no man forget The widow and her children left behind. Many who took part in the All Eng land and United match of 1860 have gone to their long rest besides poor Tarrant. Of the All England only four of us remain, viz., Tinley, Jackson, H . H. Stephenson, and myself. There are a few more left of the United who played in the match, but not many. Tha only one of either side who is still taking an active part in the cricket field is myself. I am indeed “ left alone in my glory.” In these days I often wish that some of my old comrades had not given up the game so soon, for no doubt many of them had years and years of cricket left in them when they gave up first-class ma ches. If one has once thoroughly mastered the science of batting, it is not easily lost, provided one’s eyesight does not fail. CROYDON v. SPENCER. Played at Wandsworth on April 28. C roydon . H.R.
