Surrey have lost both matches in a season 43 tim es: Australians in 1888 Cambridge University in 1877 England (North) in 1862 Gloucestershire in 1870, 1871,1877,1881, 1885 Kent in 1861, 1868 Lancashire in 1873,1880, 1881,1889 M C.C. in 1817,1867, 1869, 1870 Middlesf x in 1866, 1879, 1681.1893 Nottinghamshire in 18 2,1839,1871, 873,1874,1876, 1878, 1882,1892 Sussex in 1855, 1871 Yorkshire, 1867, 1869, 1870, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876, 1878,1881, 1885 N.B.— Surrey have failed to score a double win against only one of their opponents— M .C.C.; but as many as twelve of the latter have failed to beat Surrey twice in one year. It must be borne in mind that Surrey only played one match against Hertfordshire, Manchester, and Thornton’s X I ; and but one match a year against the South. Seldom has more than one match a year been played against the Universities. NO. 9. NOTABILIA— a. Aggregate of 1000 runs in a match :— 18G4 ... 1104 ... v. Cambridge University 1863 ... 1062 ... v. Table No. 2 should satisfy the curious in this matter of supremacy in the earlier years. c Largest attendance on record : the Surrey and Notts match at the Oval in August, 1892, when G3,763 person paid at the gates. d Surrey Secretaries—W. Denison, 1845 to 1818; J. Burrup 1848 to 1855 ; VV. Burrup 1855 to 1872 ; C. W. Alcock 1892 up to date. (Longe floreat). e Surrey have played 4 tie matches, and the following close finishes WINS. In the tie match with Kent in 1847, Kent lost the last 3 wickets when the score stood at a tie. In 1868, when 1,012 runs were scored against Cambridge University, Surrey won by only 14 runs. It is curious that no exciting finish took place between 1875 and 1883. But in those years Surrey were hope lessly weak, and were generally handsomely thrashed. S u r r e y C r ic k e t e r s , 1845 to 1893. Between 1773 and 1844, 196 different cricketers played for Surrey (see previous list); since the formation of the present club in 1845, down to the end of 1893, 286 have appeared in one or more matches (see list later on). I include sundry “ given m en” from other counties, as happened frequently in the olden times. Thus such famous names appear as David Harris, Tom Sueter (the stumper), Noah Mann, from Hambledon; Aylward, of Hampshire^ the hero of the historic innings of *67, in 1777; whilst later on, old Lillywhite and Jem Broadbridge, of Sussex, Fuller Pilch, of Kent, and many others, all assisted Surrey at different times. But since 1845, Surrey have not disdained the help of “ foreigners; ” I don’t refer here to cricketers Surrey have permanently adopted, but simply the “ given m en’’ who figured in ouly an odd match or two. Thus, it seems strange to find among Surrey cricketers, the names of Tom Box, of Sussex; Tom Adams, Hillyer, Hinkley, and Fuller Pilch, all Kent men ; but George Parr, William Clarke, and Tom Bickley, of Notts, look even more out of place in the Surrey colours ; yet as recently as 1852, Surrey borrowed them in their match with England, and w on; as they won the second match that year without imported help, it looks as if they might have trusted to their own resources for both matches. But to statistics; SURREY BATSMEN SINCE 1845. Simply here the front-rank batsmen, with their total number of runs and average throughout their county career. For want of space, all with an average below 15 among the earlier cricketers, and all below 20 runs an innings among the later batsmen, are not placed in these lists. For the sake of easy reference, they are arranged in alphabetical order, and in two lists—the first list compris ing those who made their debut .before 1870: the figures following immediately after the names re'er to the years in which they played for Surrey.
