4 0RICKET g A WEEKLY EECOBD OF ftufi GAME. JAN. 26, 1894 CRICKET_NOTCHES. By th e R ev. R . S. H o lm e s . YORKSHIRE CRICKET AND CRICKETERS. The Yorkshire County Cricket Club was formed in 1861, and reconstituted in 1892. But Yorkshire County Cricket dates back as far as 1883. Cricket in Yorkshire, however, is found as early as 1771, when Sheffield and Nottingham played the first of the 26 matches arranged by them, the last of which series took place as recently as 1857. Besides Sheffield, there were strong clubs in the following Yorkshire towns; the dates appended do not necessarily indicate the year in which these clubs were formed, but mark their first appearance in Lillywhite’s Scores and Biographies. Thus: 1813, York, Ripon, Harewood; 1828, Sheffield Wednesday; 1830, Bedale; 1833, Leeds; 1835, Selly ; 1840, Denton ; 1841, Bradford and Dalton; 1843, Otley; 1845, Knaresboro’ ; 1846, Castle Howard and Sheffield Broomhale; 1848, Hudders field. The probable reason why no county club existed prior to 1861, was lack of funds, not dearth of cricketers. Y o rkshire C r ic k e t L it e r a t u r e . Next to none. I know only of the following items, and they have been almost useless to the summary I have drawn up. Duthoit's Yorkshire Guide, 1878 ; Record of Yorkshire Cricket, 1881, and 1882—published by Fletcher, of Bury, Lancashire; Yorkshire County Cricket Club, 1893. Consequently for this synopsis I have had to wade through the 13 volumes of Scores and Biographies, Wisden’s Almanacks, and Lillywhite’s Annuals. The county secretary informs me that he “ is preparing a book on Yorkshire Cricket, which is now in the printer’s hands.” Let us hope it will be crammed fall of such details, figures, etc., as will make it valuable for reference. M atches I nclu d ed in t h is S um m ary . All Counties, first class and second class, from 1833 to 1893, inclusive. And all other matches in which Yorkshire have taken part, except those played by Yorkshire against other towns in the County, such as Sheffield (4 matches), Lascelles Hall (2), Yorkshire Gentlemen (2). All matches, too, are exclu d ed in which either Yorkshire or their opponents have played more than the regulation number of men—matches with or against odds. Yorkshire B econd eleven, and Colts’ matches, are also omitted. So again matche3 in which Yorkshire, along with another County, played England : e.q., Yorkshire and Notts v. England, 1872 and 1883; Yorkshire and Glo'stershire v. England, 1877. Only bona-fide matches, arranged by the executive, are included, though I have taken the liberty ofinserting a Lancashire match in 1867, one against Notts in 1873, one against M.C.C., at Scarborough, in 1875, and two against the Australians in 1880—none of which were arranged by the County Committee. Emmett’s or Hall’s Yorkshire X I against Shaw's or Barlow’s or Sherwin’s X I in 1881, 1883, and 1891, were evidently gate- matches only, and are not reckoned. T a b ie N o. 1.
