Cricket 1893
76 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; APRIL 20 1893 each of them. All this goes to show that there is very little tail to the team. In the field they are sure to be good. Bruce, Gregory, Bannerman, and Trott have already made their reputations here, Graham is reported to be quite up to the best standard, and the other three men are all highly spoken of. There will be five reliable bowlers in Turner, G. Giffen, Trumble, Coningham, and M c Leod. None the less, it is in the bowling that there seems to be some little cause for doubt. Coningham and McLeod have both to be taken on trust to a great extent. Trumble, as previously stated, did not justify the promise of his Australian form on his last appearance. Even with Turner and Gr. Gilfen, we have yet to see if their bowling retains its old devil. In the case of the former the doubt is not nnreasonable, in the face of his com parative ill success this last season in Australia. Still, with any of these doubts before us, the fact remains that there is the making of an exceptionally strong side in the com ing team. And when they get thoroughly well together, it certainly looks as if they would give some of the best of our teams all their work to win. THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1893. W. E. M. Tyndall will be captain of the B radfield eleven. He will have the services of five other old choices in F. J. Anderson, G. D. Dahse, H. Hinde, W. 0. Cautley, and R. C. Page. A. II. E. Haig also played iD several matches last year, and should be of great use this summer. A great deal is expected, too, of G. Hewetson, Bathurst, and King Peirce, who have all shown distinct promise. Mee of Notts has been permanently engaged as the school professional. The Hadley match has been fixed for June 24, that with Sherborne for July 14 and 15. At H aile ybu ry there will be four of last year’s eleven left. C. J. Reid will again be captain, with W. Outram, N. W . Jackson, and H . W. Snell as the other old choices. Of the players coming on, Barton and Burnaby, who were in the second eleven last season, should be of use. The eleven should be fairly strong in batting with Outram and Jackson. At present there seems rather a dearth of bowlers, though Barton and Jackson may be good. Chatterton has been engaged as coach for the first month, and there is every reason to hope that he will work a great improvement in the side. In addition to J. M. Quinton, the captain, C heltenham C ollege have at least four of last year’s eleven left in F. Champain, Bignell, Stanley, and Stratton. There is a chance, too, that Collis and Tucker may also remain. Besides the old choices there is a good bowler coming on, as well as more than one likely bat, so that there should be, at least, the nucleus of a good side. The dates for the school matches are as under : — June 19. 20—Wellington, v. W ellington College July 4. 5 -v . Marlborough College July 12,13—v. Clifton College C harterh ou se has six of last year’s eleven rem ain ing : H. Crabtree (captain), E. H. Bray (h on . sec.,) W . B. Baker, F. L. Fane, E. A n d erton , and W . A. E. Austen. The school w ill feel a great loss in G. O. Smith, who for the last four years has been the mainstay of the team, and has captained it for th e last three •years with improving success. There is, how ever, plenty of rising talent, and a fairly successful season is to be expected. BRADFIELD COLLEGE. May 16—v. w . H. P. Stevens’ Eleven May 22—v. Old Boys May 27—v.
