Cricket 1893

468 CRICKET: A WEEKLY BECORD OF THE GAME* NOV. 30, 1893 THE STRAITS’ SETTLEMENTS TEAM IN CEYLON. An eleven representing the Straits Settle ments paid a visit to Ceylon in the middle of October for a cricket tour in that colony. From the time of their arrival on October 10 to their departure on the 21st, they had a thoroughly good time of it, meeting with the greatest hospitality from everyone. The Governor himself took a conspicuous part in their reception, and the only regret for the visitors was the shortness of their stay in Ceylon. The Straits’ eleven included more than one cricketer known in England. Perhaps the best known in the South were Dr. S. C. G. Fox, who graduated at Westminster Hospital, if we remember rightly, and subsequently played for the Surrey Club, and F. G. Guggis- berg, of the Royal Engineers, Among those who represented Ceylon were Lieut. Bigge, R .E ., A. O.Whiting, of Sherborne and Oxford University, and F. L. Shand, the Old Harrovian. The scores of the three matches will be found below. The Governor and Lady Havelock were present during the match against the Colombo C.C. STRAITS SETTLEMENTS v. TRY CLUBS. A correspondent at Salisbury has sent us a copy of two numbers of the Rhodesia Herald to show how cricket is carried on away to the front in Mashonaland. The Rhodesia Herald is published at Salisbury, and claims to be “ the authorised medium for British South African Company’s Notices.” The papers just to hand contain accounts of two matches, both played at Salisbury. The first on September 30tb, between All Comers and the Civil Service, was stopped by rain, after the Service had headed their opponents’ score by two runs, with only a couple of wickets down.
