NOV. 80, 1893 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 463 June 13—ClaptoD, Clapton v. Wanstead. Clapton scored 252 for one wicket. On two successive Saturdays,against London Hospital and Wanstead re spectively, Clapton made 591 for three wickets. June 17—Streatham, Beckenham v. Slreat- liam. J. N. Noakes took thres wickets with successive balls. June 17—Leatherhead, Leatherhead v. Wimbledon. S. B. Noakes took five Wimbledon wickets, four of them clean bowled, and three with successive balls, without a run being scored off him. June 17—Bucharest, Bucharest v. Braila. The first match in Bucharest. June 24—Lord’s, Middlesex v. Surrey. A. E. Stoddart and T. C. O ’Brien made 228 for first wicket in second innings of Middlesex. June 24—Leatherhead, St. John’s School v. Christ’s Hospital. The Hospital got the last 27 runs ia seven minutes, and the winning hit was made off the last ball of the day. June 28—Uppingham, UppiDgham School v. Repton School. C. E. M. Wilson scored 183 not out for Uppingham. This was his third hundred in succes-ive innings. June 23—Lord’s, Cambridge University v. M.C.C. & G. The University scored 503 in their one inning?, June 29—Kennington Oval, Surrey v. York shire. Mr. J, Shut‘ r and Abel, tho fi st two 1atsmen, had to play six different bowlers before fifty-three were scored. June — Leyton, Essex v. Dublin University. Burns, of Essex, was given out for obstructing the field. June —Rossall School v. Liverpool. Stone and Newett scored 244 for the first wicket of Rossall. July 1—Manchester, Australians v. North of England. J. J. Lyons and Bannerman scored the first hun dred in second innings in an hour. July 3—Derby, Australians v. Derbyshire. H. Graham scored 219 out of a total of 494 for the Australians. July 3—Birkenhead Park, Staffordshire v. Cheshire. W . Brown carried his bat through both innings of Stafford shire. July 6—KenniDgton Oval, Gentlemen v. Players. In Players’ second innings Marshall, who had not played in the match, was allowed to keep wicket as a substitute for Sherwin, who had injured his hand, July 8—Lord’s, Middlesex v. Sussex. In firstinnings of Middlesex, C. P. Foley lifted one of the bails which had fallen off on a rebound of the ball from the wicket-keeper, and was given out. The umpite subsequently retracted his decision, and Foley was allowed to resume bis innings. July 10 —Lord’s, Gentlem n v. Players. G. McGregor did not give a bye in either innings (118 and 258) of Players. July 11—Kennington Oval, Surrey C. & G. v. Wanderers. In six hours of actual play, 625 runs were scored for eight wickets. Brockwell and Ayres put on 320 runs after tke fall of the fifth wicket of the Surrey Club, and were both still in when the innings was declared. July 13—Bristol, Gloucestershire v. L aica- shire. A . Ward carried his bat through Lancashire’s second inn ings for 140 out of 281. July 14—Nottingham Nott* v. Yorkshire. Sherwin’s not out 10 was highest score in second innings of Notts.. July 15—Marlow, Hampstead v. Marlow. F. R . Spofforth took all ten wickets in first inning) of Marlow, and altogether seventeen wickets for forty runs. July 17—Leylon, Essex v. Hampshire. A . P. Lucas and Russell put on 165 for ninth wicket of Essex. July 26—Kennington Oval, Surrey v. Sussex. Bran and Marlow put on 133 for the first wicket in second innings of Su;sex. July 26—Nottingham, Notts v. Kent. J. A. Dixon and Gunn put on 175 for tbe second wicket in first innings of Notts. July 26—Kennington Ova', Surrey v. Su=sex. In the three days 1001 runs were totalled. In the three following days 944 runs were got in a match between Surrey and Australians, so that 1945 runs were scored at tbe Oval that week for seventy-eight wickets. July 29—Derby, Derbyshire v. Hampshire. Derbyshire got 173 wanted to win, with the loss of only two batsmen. July 31—Portsmouth, Australians v. Oxford and Cambridge Past and Present. The Australians scored 843, the highest innings on record in an im portant match. The previous record was 803 by the Non-Smokers against the Smokers on the East Melbourne Ground in 1887. The innings lasted ten hours, and W. Bruee (191), A. C. Bannerman (133), and H. Trumble (105), each got over a hundred. (To be concluded). The Committee of the Kent County C.C. have arranged to give James Wootton a benefit (any match outside the Canterbury week) next summer. In addition to the first- class Counties home and home matches will be played with Warwickshire, beside usual fixture against M.C.C. & G. at Lord’s.
