ANDREW’S HILL, LONDON, E.O. have not m yself, how ever, com e across a m uch better illustration o f “ vim ” in cricket journalism than that em bodied in a notice of a forthcom ing m atch between the Montreal and M cG ill ClubB in the M on trea l G azette o f September 14th. This is positively the last match of the season between these clubs, and as the fat lady and skeleton dude have moved out of town, this match ought to draw, but it won’t. It is generally supposed that if eleven of the apostles, with Judas for umpire, were to play cricket in Montreal not more than fifty people w oull turn up to see the game, and out of these probably twenty-five would demand a free fight or their money back. The Montreal public, 'it w ould appear, can have no ground for com plaint o f any false delicacy on the part o f their local press. F a b iu s C u n c ta to r , w hich his real nam e is Bannerman, seems to have delighted the Philadelphian cricket public w ith his fane display o f stonewalling in the first m atch p layed by the Australians in the States. G oing in first he carried his bat through the second innings for 79. A good judge o f the gam e in Philadelphia writes m e that it was absolutely w ithout a flaw. The little m an, considering that the team on ly arrived on the ground direct from the steamer w ith an hour for practice, deserves all the credit due to an exceptionally fine per form ance. In the m atch altogether he m ade 95 for once out, and he had the bad luck in the first innings to be dis m issed, m y correspondent adds, by one o f the m ost phenom enal catches ever seen on a cricket-field. H is second innings, w hich lasted three hours and a half, was o f the higher merit from the fact that the out-cricket o f the Philadel phian eleven was altogether distinctly above the average. T h e universal praise bestowed on Ban- Herman’s display by Am erican cricketers does them infinite credit, because they them selves affect quite the differ ent style. In evidence o f this, it is only necessary to state that the big innings of 525 made b y the Philadelphians in the same m atch only occupied six hours and fifty m inutes o f actual playing time. This Bhows that the run-getting averaged precisely one and a h alf runs a m inute, or ninety runs an hour, a continuance of fast scoring w hich I should fan cy has rarely been surpassed in a m atch against Australian bow ling. A s far as I know , the Philadelphians’ score o f 525 has not been approached in any International event in Am erica, except in one match, and that hardly o f the first-class, against Canada. In any case the stand o f B ohlen and N oble, w ho put on 180 runs while they were together, has very rarely been outdone against an Australian team . I f the C ape T im es is to be taken as a reliable index o f public opinion in the C olony, the proposal to send a South A frican team to England next year does not seem to have been, as yet at all events, J. In proof of this, I need only quote from a letter received from Mr. F . M . Bissell. the secretary o f the Am eri can International M atch Comm ittee, under date o f O ctober 3— “ The m em bers o f the Australian team have m ade a very pleasant impression iu Philadelphia, and I feel hound to say that whatever bad im pression was created here by the u n fortunate occurrences that marred the visit of the Australian E leven o f 1878 has been entirely effaced by the gentlem anly and sportsmanlike m anner in w h ich the Australian E leven o f 1893 has played the m atch just concluded, i.e. the first m atch. Y ou m ay make whatever use you m ay wish o f this le tte r; it gives m e great pleasure to be able to testify to the very pleasant personal relations that exist be tween the Australians and our own cricketers.” T hebe is never any lack o f “ v im ,” to use the forcible phraseology o f our cousins, on the other side o f the B ig D rink, I
