Cricket 1893

CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. SEPT. 14, 1893 and easy boundaries. It was on this same enclosure that George Griffith achieved a feat which has not been surpassed, even if ever been equalled. I am referring of course to the memorable over in the match between the United South and Twenty-two of Hastings in 1864. On that occasion, as the veriest tyro in cricket lore will remember, Griffith hit each of the four balla cons'ituting an over from “ Farmer Bennett ” out of tho ground for tix. The direction of the hits has been more than once pointed out by good friends naturally desirous of perpetuating the best deeds of the brave men of old- In any case, the management of the Hastings and St. Leonard’s has laboured so unselfishly and well to bring good cricket to the town, that one can not fail to congratulate them on the distinction of another big record. A LAMENT. (Su:re(y)ptitiou9ly purloined from the pocket o f an “ O val’' frequenter). How are the mighty fallen From their proud aud lofty state, Hurled from their great position By the cruel hands of Fate ! For Reldom now, do Surrey’s team Enjov D*me Fortune’s smile ; The fickle jade has changed her mood And flouts them for a while. Their captain now is out of luck And cannot Shut-er copper, When head he calls, the tail turns up In methods most improper. And he can Marshall on the field A team of men most Abel, Who3e doughty deeds one often H eads, And thinks them almost fable. Could Key but only find (H)a(y)ward Dame Fortune’s Lock-wood turn, And no B a ld -w in they then would score, But one for which they yearn. W ith Fortune once within their grasp, She’ ll be the best of Dames, And l(H )en d -cr son, Success, as well To aid them in iheir games. By brilliant deeds with ball and bat, They’ ll soon forget past care3, And under happier auspices Assume victorious A y r e s . Tho’ for a time George Lohmann re3's Upon his laurels won, M ty he return to fight again In strength a Richar{d)son. Then good old county, pray cheer u p ! Dame Fortune’s favour curry, And once again the championship Bring back to brave old Surrey. W . H. W illia m s . S c o r e s of seven hundred, it goes without saying, are not of frequent occurrence. But a total of 721, with only half the side out, is a cricketcurio in excelsis. In any case, the score of the match played at The Saffrons, Eastbourne, on Monday and Tuesday, is worthy of perpetuation. So here it is. M r , S c o t t -H o l m e s ’ X I. First Innings.
