402 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S E I T. 7. 1698 THE SCARBOROUGH FESTIVAL. YO RK SH IRE v. SOUTH OF ENGLAND. It w as unfortunate that the South should not have had quite its strength at Scarborough at the end of last wee to oppose the lull side of York shire. As it was, besides W .G. there were other notable absentees, while the want of a really efficient wicket-keeper was undoubtedly a great mistake. Another thing w hich to some extent dim inished the interest in the game was the con dition o f the wicket, which bum ped at tim es so badly that the fast bowlers had to be very sparingly utilised. The Yorkshiremen, who went in first, did not fare particularly well at the out set. and at the luncheon interval on Thursday half the side were out with the total only 80. The enjoym ent of the later part of the innings was seriously m arred by a severe blow Wainwrright received from Richardson’s tow ling. The ball hit him on the head, and though after a tim e he was able to be rem oved to the pavilion he was quite unable to take further part in the game. For tunately for Yorkshire Lord Hawke, M oorhouse, and H irst all played well, so that in the end the total reached the fairly respectable figure of 226. Lord Hawke, w ho played w ith great freedom, was only batting forty minutes for his 68, and later on Hirst hit with even greater vigour, m aking his 36, in which were six fours, in twenty-five minutes. The Yorkshire captain had m ade up his m ind not to utilise Sm ith’s very fast bowling, and with W ainwright away, Hewett and Stoddart scored so freely that the last hour on Thursday produc ed 93 runs with no wicket down. Only eleven were add el on Friday m orning before Stoddart was caught. H is 54 was an innings up to his best form, though he was missed before he had scored. Hewett, after making 67 as the result’of two hours’ batting, was caught at point, and then after some slow cricket M urdoch and Ferris were dismissed in succession. At the luncheon interval the score was 176 for four wickets, and as rain fell without interm ission that was the extent of the day’s play. As the game was, at the comm encem ent on Satur day m orning there was little or no chance o f a definite finish. The dismissal of the later Southern batsm en did not occupy very long, and the last six wicket a fell for an addition o f 55 runs. Going in a second tim e the Yorkshirem en began badly, losing four good wickets for 59. A useful stand by Jackson and Peel added 58 in forty-five minutes, and their partnership was the one bright feature of the innings, w hich realised 167. Hum phreys’ lobs, as will be seen, were very successful with the later batsmen. His analysis showed five wickets for 62 runs. As less than an hour was left when the fourth innings began, and 163 were wanted by the South to win, th^-re was no possibility of any thing but a draw. Thanks t som e free hitting by Stoddart and O’Brien, 75 had been made for the loss of four batsm en when play was up. The South, therefore, wanted 86 to win with six wickets in hand. Y orkshire .
