AUG . 31 1898 ©BICKET % A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; 379 SUSSEX v. KENT. The m atches between Sussex and Kent have generally been productive o f good bcoring. and cer tainly that which ended yesterday at Brighton wai- no exception to the rule. Kent were lucky to get first use of a fine wicket, and utilised it to such good purpose that Sussex were kept in the field till five o ’ciock on Monday. The batting was uni form ly good and, indeed, every one of the eleven got double figures. Alec Hearne and Mason laid the foundation of the creditable score, putting on 78 in the first fifty minutes. Still the best battine on the side was that of Leslie W ilson, who followed up his fine perform ance at Lord’s last week, again making the highest score. Bis 63 was in every way a good inning#, without anything like the semblance of a chance Sussex, who had lost Marlow overnight for 51. were seen to even greater advantage than their opponents on Tuesday. Bean, who had Murdoch as his partner at the wicket, hit away in th** moat resolute style, and the first hour realised 93 runs. After adding 111 the partnership was dis solved *y the dism.saal of Bean, whose finely hit score of 89 was only marred by a chance to mid-off at 57. Murdoch saw Wilson unluckily run out. and was then caught at point with the total at 176 for a thoroughly well got 54. Brann, after * life at short 3lip before he had scored, hit freely, and at lunch tim e tbe score was 216 for four wickets Brann was the first to go ffierthe resumption.but the two young players, Low e and Killick, of Horsham, both lent Newham useful assistance, and the latter was in when Newham was at last well caught at point, bor his 97 Newham was batting two hours and forty minutes. He has not been seen to better advantage this season, and his success natural y gave great satisfaction. The Kent total was passed while the two last batsm en were in, and in the end bussex were left with a lead of 15 runs, a very creditable perform ance aft r a big score of 353. Less than h* f an hour remained when Kent entered on their second innings, and in this short time Mason and Alec Heame put on 42 without a wicket. Yester day m orning 43 we^e added before Mason wan out, to ie followed at the same total by a . Hearne. At luncheon time the score was 156 for three wickets with W ilson and Rasheigh in, and with the addition o f 106 for the loss of five more batsmen the innings was closed Sussex, wanting 248 to win, went in a second tim e with less than two hours left for play. There seemed to be little or no chance of a definite result, and though Alec Hearne just at the end was really successful in getting four batsmen, the game cam e to an end on ihe fall of the sixth wicket. Kent had all the test of the draw, Sussex wanting 174 to win with only four wickets in hand. Killick, of Horsham, m ade his first appearance for Sussex in th's m atch. He is a right-handed fast bowler and left handed bat. K e n t . First Innings. *3econd Innings. Mr. J. R. Mason, c Bean, b H um phreys..................48 b Humphreys ... 52 A.
